Positive income, still losing money..?
So my current (and first game) is nearly over with only 40 turns remaining. I lead in score, with no other vc within reach for any civ in the game. Russia is only 100 points behind me, so I was preparing to attack them with my vastly superior army and navy and pretty much end the game. I'm Egypt.

Problem is, even though my "profit" is +120ish (low right now since I switched to domestic trading) I'm still losing money. It pushed me all the way down to 0 and caused an amenity loss (which of course caused revolts and loss of income which effectively puts my profit in the negative). I have an autosave 2 turns prior to the revolts, but can't figure out why I'm losing money. The only thing I did different since I noticed the drop was start building a nuclear bomb.

Is it me? Or is it a bug?

Likely you have a spy or spies siphoning your funds

If that's the case, I am surely doomed.

I had a spy siphon funds from one of my cities, took over 800gold one turn. It isn't a gradual thing, a 1-time theft dependant on the number of turns it takes for a spy to complete it's operation, in which it succeeds, fails, and/or is reassigned. The previous turn I spent nearly all my money on a purchase, leaving me with less money than they could steal, yet the game said they stole that much. And I wasn't at 0 gold after it happened, either. I don't know if they actually take money from your treasury or if the game just creates an amount for them to take.
Regardless, if you have the previous saves before, should go check your cities and see how they are doing regarding amenities and income. If you can set several focused on gold and try to trade another civ for one of their amenities, it might help.
Aside from having made a purchase, upgrade, drastic civic change, or patronage of a great person that you forgot about, I don't see how such a massive change in your income could happen.

Did you have high gold trade routes with the civ you declared war on?

I hadn't declared war on them yet. Also spies seem to take gold from the cities, rather than you personally. As I had a spy take over 1k from me, which I did not have. In fact i lost no money from it what so ever. Not sure how that works specifically but it would appear you get an amount that some how reflects the size of the city.

At this point I'm 100% certain that it was a bug. Since even with a positive cash flow, I was gaining no money. It happened immediately after constructing my first nuke.

its a spy siphoning funds. damage was already done, can't stop it now. boost your income as high as you can, get some spys hunting for spies and hope you catch them before they do it again.

It's definitely not a spy..

This is one of four things
1: a spy is siphoning your funds- to counter this place defensive spies in your cities. Its worth noting that the spy protects districts that it is in plus all surrounding districts. Meaning if you have a spy in an industrial zone but have a commercial hub adjacent to it, the spy will protect both Districts.
2: you have trade routes that have finished thier route and need to be reassigned or they got pillaged.
3: you were suzerain of one or more Commercial city states and you have now lost your suzerain.
4: you were using one or more policy cards that were saving/earning you gold and you changed your policies. Such as the commercial/harbor adjacency cards, conscription, the enlightenment card, or mercantilism card.

Or it could be a bug.

This right here appeared after patch. It's really, really harsh now. If it's spies then it's way over the top OP. I lost my entire army. I had a profit of over 40 gold and 500 gold. Started losing gold like crazy. I didn't even have a way to combat it at the time. (early game)
Edit; Read again! We have POSITIVE income and lose money like there's no tomorrow, many turns in a row. Feels like a bug to me, or maybe they missed a tooltip or something. NO info on why the gold disappears. I lost maybe 1200-1800 gold all in all (I did what I could to gain gold. Diplo trading etc)
Since I lost one unit per turn... Maybe 10-12 turns in a row.

Silmilar thread already on the forum. Most people seem to ignore the fact that your income flow as indicated on the top bar already takes into account changes to traders, trades, suzerain status, policy cards etc. Only spies should be off that record as by their very nature, they are secret. Or a bug.

And it's very likely if the AI is using spy theft to take your money, there isn't that much you can do about it. I was running a Science victory with 5 spies on my Space pad and they still sabotaged it every cycle. If you knew you the turn they were stealing it you could try reloading it to fail but it's entirely possible the game is hard locked to fail you.

I'm not sure why you people keep posting here about spies. It wasn't spies. That money does not come from you, but your cities.
Ethric Nov 7, 2017 @ 9:07am
You said you built nukes. They do have a high maintenance cost. 3 or 4 of them can loss you 100+ gold a turn.
jims Nov 7, 2017 @ 7:25pm
Maintenance, trade routes, trading with major civs etc are all calculated in your income at the top of the screen - so it there is apositive figure it is not those taking the money - sheesh
