Which multiplayer modes are available? Server needed?
I am looking for a multiplayer game for a closed circle of friends.

If we want to play Civilisation (V or VI) do we neeed our own server?

Do players make their turns consecutively (one after another) or simultaneously at any time?

The website hints at several multiplayer modes, but I could not find any detailed information about these. Downloading and playing the demo did not reveal much either. What are the multiplayer modes offered? Where can I find more information about these?

I *thought* you could password protect your game lobbies. That way only people you know can enter your games. Not sure if this is true or not as I have never played a multiplayer game of Civ.

Don't think there is an option to have your own "server", other than the fact that one of the players is technically hosting the game.

Hopefully someone who has actually played multiplayer can jump in here and give you some first hand info!

Just to clarify: It would be better if we do not have to setup our own server, and if we could play simultaneous and asynchronous. I have not played the last several Civ versions, so I have no clue at all what multiplayer options are available nowadays.

My understanding is the person with the best computer should host. You can make your game private.
Mods, you need to search the library of mods to find what suits your game. Everyone should have the mod.
Also it's best if everyone has the same content.

Okay, so we cannot play without being simultaneously online then? This kills it for us already.

Incorrect, you can play simultaneosly*
You set a timer for how long each turn is. Usually quicker at the beginning. slower later in the game, as there are more units and descions to be made.
There is a mode if you want to play with someone on the same computer called "hotseat". In that mode you each take your turn, one after the other. This slows the game down for sure, but still enjoyable to a point.

Also, I've only played 'hotseat' in civ6, not online. I did try civ5 mp-online. It was problamatic at best. Much of what I mentioned above is from those experiences and what I read on the chat. There is a MP discussion board, primarily for finding games with people.

In order of questions asked:
No.
You can pick in the settings.
Civ 6 has a wikia that answers most general questions such as the last two, or you can read the guide ingame which also has the same answers. But, there is pretty much just the base game to play. You can do teams if it's your fancy. Same as single player, but with other people.

Add me if you want tips/pointers.
