The official Linux thread
Alright party penguins. We are proud to announce the launch of Civ VI Linux today (Feb 9th)!

I'll keep this thread updated with the most current info possible, so check in frequently for updates and of course to share your experience.

A huge heartfelt thanks to all the patient Linux gamers that supported our efforts. Especially those that sent cookies to our office with notes of Civ VI encouragement ;)

System requirements below:

Operating System: Ubuntu 16.04 / SteamOS
CPU Processor: Intel Core i3 530 or AMD A8-3870
CPU Speed: 2.93 GHz
Memory: 6 GB
Hard Disk Space: 15 GB
Video Card (NVIDIA): GeForce 650
Video Card (ATI): Not Supported
Video Card (Intel): Not Supported
Video Memory (VRam): 1 GB

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Some Intel i3 Processors may require an additional 2 GB Swap Partition.

If you dont meet the above system requirements, that does NOT mean you wont be able to run Civilization VI. If we know anything about the Linux community, its that you all find a way to make something work on your specific distro and comparable hardware sets. Chime in here with issues, and we will either help you get a ticket into our support system, or if unsupported there are many penguins that can help.

UPDATE 4/20/17 - We are finally live with the Spring update!

UPDATE 12/10/18 - Cross platform update is finally live! All platforms are now in-sync and can play together.

UPDATE 4/2/19 - The Antarctic Late Summer Update is now live. All platforms in-sync and can continue cross platform play :)

Is this really true? As of the time of my query it wasn't true. Did the company remove spyware from the games in that short amount of time?
As far as I'm aware, it was never in the Mac/Linux versions of the game.

I suppose the on-going concern here is (if my understanding of the RedShell product is accurate):

  • RedShell provides a simple API endpoint, which means that looking for RedShell libraries in the Steam depot does not produce a final answer. The game developer can integrate RedShell into the game directly by themselves.
  • It's possible for game developers to implement RedShell on their servers. Thus, if you are running packet capture (eg wireshark) to look for communication to known RedShell servers, this is not necessarily definitive. The client data is simply passing through the game publisher's servers before reaching RedShell's servers. If the communication to the game publisher's servers is encrypted, you can't reasonably know what's being sent unless you ran
    strace -r -f -e trace=network
    ...or something.
  • Considering the above, it shouldn't be hard to implement this client-side, avoiding use of any resource/attribute names that would show if you ran strings(1) against the game files.

All that said, I don't think Aspyr would be stupid and lie about it, knowing that the Linux community is smart enough to find out the truth. If RedShell was integrated and they were under some NDA with 2K about it, they simply wouldn't respond or discuss that at all.

Given that it's 19 days since this comment, I'm starting to be skeptical that this final candidate exists. I don't want to be skeptical, but at the rate things are going, there's going to be another Windows update and then Linux will be even further behind.

Is the delay because something didn't work right or is partner approval being withheld for some reason? Or did a marketing department get ahold of things and demand a specific release date?

In fact, that's been the problem with this release cycle. There are been too many "any minute now" implications followed by weeks of radio silence. While I do expect the final product to be of the same quality I've come to expect from Aspyr, it gets seriously frustrating to be told, direclty or indirectly, that the new update is coming Real Soon Now™ and then, nothing.

Well, it might be a design choice that makes cross platform much more difficult. Aspyr might be left to pick up the pieces and 'figure it out' while the game was developed with Windows in mind.
Mac has a decent user base as well but Windows has more 'tools' so if something is missing on the latter than things get difficult.

I've been at Gamescom since last Friday, so apologies for the delay in response. A crash bug was found on a specific chipset during final test/approval. We are fixing now, and hope to get the build back into approvals this week.

Awesome! Thanks for the update. (And on behalf of everyone, sorry for the impatience!)

It's been more then two months since patch was released, I'm not sorry, I'm angry.

Mostly at Firaxis/2K who released it with all the bugs.

GNU/Linux support is just sad. I just want to play this game with my friends, and they are playing on Windows.

And the performance in Linux is awful compared to Windows. I don't know why this game doesn't run in Vulkan.

for me it works fine. I only need crossplay D:

I created thread called [GNU/Linux][MacOS] Multiplayer, but it was removed probably. I propose to meet in play for players from this thread.

macOS can't play with Linux as they have recieved the Crossplay patch and thus are up to date with Windows. Linux can only play with Linux.

The next patch, when it comes out is supposed to give us cross platform play. (which is gonna be soon I hope) :)
Enigmatic Sep 7, 2018 @ 4:31pm

Is there any update or ETA on the Linux patch coming out anytime soon?

We are still wrestling with a serious crash on i3 processors. Obviously not something we would prefer to go out with. Sincere apologies for the delay :\
