Secondly.
The NATION of Australia wasnt created by the aborigines(sp?) Theyre part of it, but before britain colonized it, and annexed it, im sure Australia wasnt called... Australia.
Its like asking why arent the Navajo running the US.... or the Celts running England. The Navajo didnt create the US, they lived in North America, but they didnt write the constitution, or largely take part in the civil or revolutionary wars(notice I said largely)
The continent was named Australia (shortened from "Terra Australis Incognito") centuries before the nation of Australia was founded on it. If the Australian native population met any of the other qualifications for a civ, it would be conceivable they could make one from them, but because of their geographic and cultural isolation, it is unlikely.
Civilization as a game, could, because most matches start in the stone age, be based on the people that were on each continent at the time the game began, and that would make a lot of sense to me.
Also, don't downplay a people just because they are, by the european version of history, "isolated".
Just because we didn't meet the Aztecs, Inca, Iroquis, Maori, Hawaiians, Navajo, Inuit, Cree, or any of the other HUNDREDS (thousands?) of cultures out there does not mean they were not significant in their time or part of the world.
Also, don't downplay a culture or a people just because they don't have a flag.
There's not really a "european" version of Australia being geographically isolated. It's the same on Asian maps. Not sure what you're talking about here. If a population stayed on one relatively small landmass for their entire existence and communicated very seldomly with outside influences, they are said to have been isolated. It's not a subjective appraisal of their worth, it's an observation of their behaviors.
Most isolated societies don't make it into Civ as playable factions.
Well, by your argument then of "dont downplay"(which is why I linked that first page) could be used for THOUSANDS of civilizations. There were several hundred different native american tribes in the US alone. Now imagine the different vikings tribes, the aborigines, the african tribes, asia, middle east, Sotuh and Central America.
Its not downplaying when on a global and historical scale, they were MINOR. Sorry the confines of a program, creative work, and man power cant accommodate every tom, ♥♥♥♥, and harry of the known world.
I'm a causasian and even I was offended by the slight delivered to non-Caucs by making the Australian rep a white guy. C'mon, how many Fosters drinkers whe within 10,000 miles of the continenet in 3000 BCE?
On a side note, it always (Civ 2 on) seemed kind of silly to have one character personify a civ throughout history.
Not to mention having to conduct diplomacy in the year 2000 AD with a guy dressed in feathers carrying a spear. Firaxis, please get off the cheap and update the chars wardrobe and dialog. This game has to be a cash cow. Please spend some money refining it.
Thanks.
