METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

(spoiler) About Paz...
So I managed to get her back to Mother base.

What is the point of this characters arc? Kojima introduced the character in Peace Walker as Peace incarnate, an amazing Storytelling Idea. Paz was a literal sysmbol of personified peace that you wanted to protect. ...Only to have her be an evil double agent in the very end (about which I only learned later) - I was very upset about that twist. It completely undermined her purpose for the sake of another twist.

Then, in Ground Zeroes, Kojima abused her to the ultimate maximum. I mean, literally. I can't recall any character in any medium who got abused as horrible as Paz did. I don't even want to write it out.

Then, at the end of Phantom Pain, I get a tape with Paz and Zero, painting her again as an evil agent up to no good who deserved what was coming to her.

But now, out of nowhere, Kojima pulls out the amnesia trope, retcons the whole chopper scene (wtf?) and now I am meant to accept the good old peaceful Paz again, a character I liked in the first place, that got completely messed up in between!

I am sorry, this is just too much. A story loses all its impact if previous scenes can simply be retconned as "wrong", characters die or survive at will, their motivations change wildly in minutes...

It's like MGSV was written by someone who just didn't care anymore. Just... whatever. I just can't figure out what Kojima wanted to say with MGSV. And I suspect he couldn't either. I feel like Peace Walker was the MGS5 story, and MGSV is a weird unnecessary appendix to it.

If you listen to all her secret diaries in PW, it's actually quite a sad story.

So... what. I went after another wandering soldier, who inexplicably carries a photo of Paz and wants to gas the ♥♥♥♥ out of me. And another. And another. And a fourth one. And another one.

(After a point, I simply called gas grenade air strikes on the area and shoveled them up.)

After not three, not six, not nine, but TEN times of doing basically the same exact mission over and over and OVER again, all I have to show for it is the same "Uh a picta! Oh noez my head hurts" cutscene, and four bland tapes about preparing groundhog peace day.

Now I am finally out of wandering soldiers to collect. What is going on??

Did they have some kind of game-time quota to hit? At least 70 hours of whatever content they could squeeze out? Repeat a mission 10 times why not, at least the player is occupied?

This game is really beginning to frustrate me. Nothing adds up, nothing amounts to anything. It's just a hollow waste of time. The opposite of what I came to expect from a Kojima game, really.

Sorry for being such an ass, but I need to vent some frustration right now.

Did you collect the last picture of the butterfly, hanging in the hallway just before the door to her room? That one will show you the ending of her story.

Oh wow, thanks for that tip! Dark Souls wishes it had sidequests this obtuse.

...

...

Well. I guess I got what I wanted. It was all a dream. Of course this means Miller and Ocelot are also figments of my imagination then. (Or did they just humor me, pretending to see Paz) But since I am not myself anyway, I guess it doesn't matter in the end, anyway.

God! This is so frustrating! What happened? Wasn't this game supposed to be a revolutionary, mindblowing epic of unfathomable scale and proportion? Why is this story such a meandering, pointless mess?

because Konami decided that kojima was WAY to reliable right after he made them a ♥♥♥♥ load of money and kiked him out, right around the time that they LOST THEIR ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MINDS!!!!!
but seriously, it all boiled down to time constraints.
frankly, i liked the part with paz, quite a bit.

It's basically him hallucinating the entire time. You can even see it because at the end he wakes up from being on the ground. Although I wish someone would wake him up instead lol.

The whole Paz story was likely a fragment of the Medic's original memories. He tried to convince himself he saved Paz out of guilt, likely blaming himself for not finding the second bomb. Basically the whole thing was a hallucination of the medic to make himself think he saved her.

You could also say it's a side effect of the shrapnel in his skull, as it's said he'd suffer psychological trauma or something in the intro/one of the casette tapes.
