I was kneeling down and hoping to interact with him, and ... whack. Oops. Definitely did not intend this. Poor little fella fell over. Feared he was dead but... he got back up.

Will this impact anything in the future? Other than possibly his poor little digital brain?

No, you can animal abuse him all you want while DD is still a puppy. Once he grows up and can go on missions with you, if you kick him or throw a magazine or shoot him or do anything harmful to him then your bond with him will decrease.

He annihilates you during "Operation Intrude N312" an event that takes place after MGSV:TPP.
And I have scientific and lore proof to this theory.

Poor DD. Though I accidentally ran over Quiet racing in to the LV at one point. She can dodge and disappear, but can't move out of the way of a jeep.

I've found you have to be pretty careful with DD in the field because he tries to stay right by you at all times. Like once I snuck up behind a guy and zapped him with the shock arm, but DD was in range and got zapped also. Same thing goes for kicking an unconscious guard to wake him up, because once I accidentally kicked DD instead.

Luckily he is pretty easy to regain bond points with, and if he "dies" it just costs you a bit of GMP and he's fine.
