I think for me it's the room for a personal approach to any objective, coupled with the size of the mission areas. Of course, you'll be wanting to do Snake stuff like fultoning people, doing hold ups, and such and so forth, but there's many ways to go about it. There are some ways that are better than others, but playing like that on my first run using the hands-down best camo dulled the experienced. It's so much fun because you can use anything and everything. You can call Pequod to decimate the AO, change the dynamics of an individual area by disabling their power, tackle an operation at night or day with varying patrols to avoid/tackle and routes of entry to discover and use as necessary. I've felt a sense of discovery now, 2 years later coming back after bitter disappointment. I've found crack climbing spots I never saw before and found whole new ways to tackle an old problem.
The story isn't what people wanted, the open world introduction into the MGS series is a little weird feeling after being confined to linear (Linear is not bad, do note) progression.
For most of the folks here, though, it's something about FOBs. They love the stuff.
Good to note after you 100% everything and you don't know what else to do, there are a handful of mods on Nexus that can further extend your playtime.
Also, you made a mistake playing the games in "chronological order." The chronological order of MGS is the release order. You see, each game elaborates on the stories of the previous games (or retcons them). Each game also builds on the mechanics of the previous games. MGS1 would have had less significance for me if I had played 3 first.
Some people like quick games, some people don't. If I were 1/2 way through or more in any game in just 13 hours, the game becomes a disappointment to me regardless of story or gameplay.
My criteria for a proper length game goes... If I can play the game 8 hours per day over a 14 day period and still not be done with the game, then THAT is a proper length game. If I can play even longer then it's EPIC!
It's considering Cost for performance. Providing all $60 games are equal, the one with the longer playing time is the better game, in my opinion.
This game offers greater than 2000 hours playing time if you want it. Story is about 100 hours or 13 days at 8 hours per day, but the game doesn't stop just because the story does. That is why I love this game.
People gave kojima too much credit.
tomokazu, kojima and Yoji Shinkawa all played an important role in created the feel of metal gear
play metal gear, metal gear 2, metal gear solid, metal gear solid 2, mgs 3 and finally mgs 4
all in that order
open world might work if they had more time... but they didn't and that's why many missions are fillers and the ending didn't justify the cause...
they could've condense the game to 20 - 30 hours and polish to perfection instead of focusing on mini missions and building motherbase
in my long time metal gear solid fan opinion... mgs 1 - 3 is the series high point
tpp is a great game in its own right.. however, when compared with previous games in the series it pales in comparission
Depends. MGS3 was than 5 better, but only because of the way it did camo index and of course who doesn't like snake eating? MGS2 is worse than 5. That was just difficult to follow, gets too weird and even when you've figured it out you're still asking yourself..... Why? 5 is definitely better than Metal Gear 1 and 2. Of course, that is mostly because Ancient pixelated graphics can never compare to today's technology. If you want to say anything pales in comparison it would be those two pales in comparison to any of the others in the series. I would put 1 between 3 and 5, which would make 5 the 3rd best in the series. I'm not counting Peace Walker, Portable Ops or 4 because I haven't personally played those 3 since I did not have the medium they were put out on, but all in all, 5 holds its own in comparison to the rest of the series that I have played.
I played through MGS series and I considered MGS2 is, by far, the best game in the series, the magnum opus of Kojima's writing. Which let me to be disappointed with MGS3 due to how safe Kojima played with that game.
I can say the same thing about MGSV, "was just difficult to follow, gets too weird and even when you've figured it out you're still asking yourself..... Why?"
MGS is supposed to be wierd, hard to follow, with plot twists and turns. But, at least MGS 2 had a much much better twist than mgs V could ever dream of.

But, then again who go into MGS expecting a great shooter? not many.. and they will be dissappointed...
For those who dig deeper though, they will be rewarded in a way that not many games can present.
The message of this game was so ahead of its time and so spot on that it's actually pretty scary.
What many people don't get is that the marketing of the game itself was an example of the S3 plan. During marketing Raiden was never mentioned or shown. Even the back of the box doesn't mention or show him. The marketing (and Kojima) manipulated the audience to sell their game and to drive the point home... but people didn't get it. I didn't get it . So everyone started whining about Raiden without even realizing that by doing that they demonstrated the S3 point.
"Snake is better", "Raiden's a whiny girl", "He's too feminine"... guess what, he's like that because he represents the gamer (the average gamer isn't hot, isn't a spy, isn't a mercenary, isn't wise, isn't brave, basically isn't Solid Snake), the same gamer Snake invites to toss away their ID: always think with your own head, shape your own ID (intended also as one's self, one's identity) and pass YOUR values to the next generation.
It's easy to put off something as weird or strange if you don't understand it.
Doubt those other games had online base building!
those other games was released almost 20 years ago
