Silencers on STN Weapons
They don't seem to have any effect.
Actually I take that back there is only 1 effect: Guards will not report your gunshots to the CP.

All of the other advantages of a silencer don't seem to apply to weapons with STN for some reason.

There's really no point in having a silencer if the enemy can pinpoint your exact location, return fire, and even cause a combat alert if they have a sniper rifle.

There is a point. They can't tell where you're shooting from. STN weapons do cause soft alerts, but that's because the guards grunt when hit because they're being stunned. You would grunt too if you got hit in the chest with a beanbag at 100 miles per hour.

Lethal weapons and STN weapons have an impact noise that will alert guards. NukeDoc already covered the advantage though -- they still don't know where you're shooting from. And, the radius of the impact noise is much smaller than a gunshot.

Another advantage to tranquilizer weapons is you can use them to make a guard turn and look a different way, without setting off the soft alert that comes with a STN or lethal impact.

I've grown real fond of the RP. They may see the smoke, but usually I can just stroll on by.

The NPCs I shot at with the STN weapon shot back at me without triggering a combat alert. (or they shot where I was when I shot them)

Then a Sniper very quickly noticed me and triggered a combat alert.

It seems to me like the silenced STN weapon does not conceal your position because of this. And it was a very long distance, more than 100m. And the guy actually hit the cover I was behind.

Guards will sometimes fire in the direction of where they think shots are being fired from. They can sometimes figure this out from hearing the shots you fire landing on surfaces near to them.

If you get hit at this point, it's purely by chance and you should still remain undetected.

With the snipers, you need to be motionless and get your head done in the prone position (press E when lying down) and wait for them to stop aiming their rifle(s) at you.

If you get shot by them before a CA is triggered, you still have a brief moment to hit them back, to avoid a the alert. This can be challenging, since sometimes your body will convulse when hit by a sniper bullet so you don't have a good opportunity to hit them back quickly enough.

Try the UN_ARC_NL assault rifle and you'll notice a difference with how the guards react compared to the stun shotgun, it's a little bit more subtle but not entirely so!

Did you go into deep cover? (or whatever the game calls it?

They will fire in your general direction because where they may not have seen you, they could tell the general direction the shots were coming from. Roll left or right a few rolls and go into deep cover. The snipers will most likely overlook you and the shots will miss. If you don't go to deep cover the snipers will likely see you and then you're toast.

Sure agreed, that's what I was also trying to say. I think with both explainations he should be fully versed in this now!

Although I do want to say this again, your only toast if you don't react to a sniper shooting at you. You have to be very fast, but you get a chance to hit them before they hit you or just after, prior to the CA being triggered.

You know, I wouldn't mind if the guards fired in my "general direction" like you guys are saying, but that's simply not the case.

I was more than 100m away from the guy, probably more like 200 or 300, and he shot at and successfully hit the exact cover I was hiding behind (a low wall) without ever actually "spotting" me, which is not how a silencer works in real life or how it should work in a game.

The sniper spotting me and sounding a combat alert further cemented that the AI in fact do know the exact position I fired from, since the scopes on the snipers have a very limited FOV. He must have been looking directly at me.

Stun weapons like the rubber bullet assault rifle/smg, which is what it sounds like you're using, have physical impact sounds and the guards can track them based on trajectory when you miss or hit. Standard dmg bullet based weapons are the same way. It's just how the AI in the game works. Don't want that to happen? Learn to CQC. Or use the stun shotgun.

We can't complain about the way things "should be" we can only play things the way they are and in knowing how things are, adapt our play style to fit what we need. There's always a way around it.
ItchyDani3l Nov 15, 2017 @ 4:28pm
yeah my way around it is to not use them.
i'm just lamenting that it's very much a wasted potential

If you want to be quiet, that's what cqc and holdups are for. Guns are for ramboing.

Snipers are a different beast. Their good sight is why they're so popular in FOBs.

In that case, every time you shoot, immediately move to a different position or get behind cover. Needless to say... taking out snipers should probably be a priority.

I find it extremely irritating that you cant put suppressors on stun weapons in customization. I mean really, you can put an assault rifle suppressor on a sniper rifle or huge machine gun, but cant put an ARC AR suppressor on an ARC AR stun weapon?

Run around with the stun AR with the infinity bandana for a while. You'll figure out pretty quick why they did that.
