What games do I need to play before this?
I'm unaware of the RE timeline, what is the difference between RE and Revelations?

This particular title is set between RE5 and RE6. Revelations series is supposed to be a mix of survival horror REs of yore and newer action shootery sequels (latter is prevalent).

I suppose it would be best if you played RE HD Remaster, RE5 and first Revelations before this one.

That'd explain why I feel weird. Do I just skip from one to 5? Are 2, 3, and 4 on Steam?

If you have and are willing to invest time then by all means play them all. RE4 is on Steam while the other two are quite dated (especially to those that never have played them before) and are not only difficult to run on modern systems but also procure in the first place. Best way to get and play them would be, in case you have a PS3, via PSN.

Technically, for this game, you only need to know about RE5. You need to know who Albert Wesker was and what Ouroboros (a.k.a. Ooba-robo) is. The two main characters come from RE2 and RE1, respectively, but you can live without their full backstory.

It actually has very small references to Revelations 1, RE1, even to RE2, plus its plot is directly copied from Code: Veronica and Gaiden, but none of those is needed to understand the story, you'd only miss the subtle references.

Revelations games are meant to be spin-offs to add some variety tot he core series. In the early 2000s, the Survivor series filled the same role in the RE franchise. RE is actually a pretty vast world, but there are a handful of games that require you to know about the events of some other in any way. (RE0 relies a lot on RE1, and that is more or less about it.)

Play and watch in this order if you want have greatest story and mystery gameplay:
RE1
RE2
RE3
RE0
RE: Code Veronica
RE: Degeneration (Movie)
RE4
RE: Revelations
RE5
RE: Revelations 2
RE: Domination (Movie)
RE6
RE7

Starting from RE4, RE6, Revelations is stupid idea.
People who do this, lose every aspect of mystery and story of this great universe, they know nothing, they can't feel any mystery, they just run in game and shots.
I will don't offence players who do that, but i call them "noobs".

Or you can start play form REV2 (almost end of the story of this universe), skipping everything whats happened 1-almost 20 years ago.

I don't know, the movies aren't that good :/

What is RE0?

How do I get 2, 3, and 4? Gosh, I only bought this so that I could get into the series and it was cheap, looks like this is going to be a costly series, and I'll need to find physical disks, and possibly a PS3 :/

The Capcom movies, not the live-action ones. The Capcom films are part of the RE canon, although he placed Degeneration wrong, it takes place somewhere around Revelations 1, so after RE4 and before RE5.

RE0 is Resident Evil Zero (or Resident Evil 0), a prequel made for RE1 a few years after, using the same style and engine that the Resident Evil 1 REmake does. It was originally released on GameCube only, but it has a PC port now on Steam. It takes place 24 hours before RE1 and tells the adventures of one of the RE1 supporting characters.

Nice list, but.. I suggest play RE3 before RE2. When Jill got infected by Nemesis at clock tower, then pause the game, continue the game by playing RE2, after finish RE2, then continue again RE3 from pause state.

Why? There is no need for such pedantism regarding the timeline as nothing will be spoiled if one plays RE3 Nemesis after RE2.
