Cleric is also great for starting because they have 3 uses of holy weapon buff which helps cuts down a good chunk of the boss on the boat. More of a time saver than anything but still great if you want to get to level 12ish (I forget the exact level) for some early skills/stats.
Grasping ring is nice, gives extra salt for every kill, percentage based, maybe +10%? you can get a second one later in the game - kill bosses with both of them on. You won't be dissappointed.
You will gain many extra levels throughout the game with Grasping Ring equipped.
And it makes farming salt very beneficial and quick to get a few extra levels when you want or need them.
Otherwise, don't be afraid to spend gold on consumables like Pitchfire, Blessed Blade, Stained Page, etc. They buff your weapon for like 20 or 30 seconds, adds some decent extra damage to your weapons, and certain enemies and bosses are weak to fire, lightning, holy, arcane, etc.
Buffing can make the difference in a hard fight.
I'm pretty late game, but I have around 30 of each kind that I've found.
I use em all the time.
Gold gets progressively easier to obtain as you go through the game. So really.. don't be afraid of spending it.
Spend your salt on level ups whenever you get the chance, or, use them to upgrade weapons at the blacksmith.
Merchants, Blacksmiths, etc, come in the form of Stones that you have to find. You must manually place them at a Sanctuary. This is done by choosing "Make Offering" while nealing at an Altar.
Creeds.
Be careful with these.
They are one way choices.
The decision is made at certain sanctuaries ("Take Oath")
If you accept one creed - accepting another will nullify your previous one, and align you with the new one.
Creeds are covenants like in Dark Souls, where you can offer things that slain enemies drop, and choose between 'gifts' as a reward - like an extra healing potion, or a single use buffing stone that replenishes at sanctuaries.
When you switch creeds, you lose any offering progress you might have made with them.
You need to have a leader stone placed in the sanctuary, and speak with them to advance the creed, to gain the gifts.
Its not a big deal to switch, and certain creeds will benefit certain styles of play more.
Just be aware of it ;)
If you just want to reck the game then
1)Start as a knight (armor does not matter, in fact remove it for better rolling, you just want the sword skill)
2)Take the Idol sarting gift.
3)Take the Three Creed and buy a Kureimoa from them.
4)Kill the Sodden knight.
5)Apostate and join the Forest.
6)Transform Kureimoa into Shrouded Bulwark with the Idol.
7)Profit.
I think it's fine that some weapons are better then others. It's a single player game. It's more fun to have OP weapons and sh1t weapons, then to have weapons that are all roughly the same.
I face-rolled the Sodden Knight then decided I would look better with a sword so I made a Knight instead.
Now I'm on my 14th attempt to kill the Sodden Knight... who knew a pitchfork was so much better than swords?
