The tier system
I play this game for quite some years (actually since release) and I'm quite good in team modes, however compared to that I suck balls in duels.
Now the problem is, I've got like 34% wins in duel but for whatever reason I'm still on tier 4 so I have to play against people who win for example 90% of their duels. I've got nothing against fighting good opponents and I don't have a problem with losing but getting raped in every single match is getting kinda boring.
On what foundation does quake live actually determine my tier? Shouldn't it be more like 80-100% wins = tier 4, 40-60% wins = tier 3 etc?

the tier system is broken, once you're on tier 4 you always get people who are miles better than everyone else since the possible skill level is huge. I'd says the tiers right now work like this:
-bad
-good
-experienced
-then great all the way to master level paired together

Noob question; how do you know what tier you're in? :S I can't see any stat that indicates as such? Or is this a pro sub only thing?

The "stats" you seek are, surprisingly, on the statistics subpage on your profile. Scroll down and hover your mouse over the small images under the bars for a tool-tip on which game mode it is.

When there was 5 tiers it was better. They just mushed them into 4 tiers without ever thinking about the consequences.

I was Tier 3 when there was 5 tiers then they reduced to 4 tiers and doing that made me into tier 4 with all the awesome players.

My elo is less than 1000 in CTF (899) yet I see some players with 2000 or more in servers I play on.

ELO ? Is that a premium-only feature, or can anyone see his ELO somewhere ?

Its not an official thing, some 3rd party folks just thought it up, and made their own "addon" thing you can download somewhere, that shows an alternative way of rank

ITs not officially supported by Quake Live, but ELO is a real world way of determining a players kill its been around for decades.

Don't pay attention to your tier in duel. It's basically a worthless piece of information which isn't used for anything (basically) unlike with other gametypes. By the way, QL's skill estimation system for duel is Elo as well (not talking about QLRanks here) albeit it takes frags into account instead of simply the win/loss result.

I'm finding tier 4 so hard I'm no longer having fun. Fair play if you can stick with it but like OP eluded to; getting destroyed all the time is just rage inducingly frustrating. Think I'll take a week off and try again, excuse me while I punch a brick wall repeatedly.
