(people call it strafe aim)
- pick a good sensitivity, somthing not too high or low [1]
- stand in front of an enemy, and put crosshair oh him
- when he tries to dodge do NOT try to aim with your mouse, keep your mouse still and strafe left / right with your KEYBOARD
- use mouse only to correct your crosshair, if the enemy goes too far, or behind you.
With practice you will get more and more accuracy, and only after few months of this, you can start to include some mouse aim.
tl;dr
do not aim with your mouse, put a croshair on your enemy, and aim with your keyboard, if he goes right, you go right, if he goes left you go left,
Let me ask you this, whats the point of averaging 45% LG the entire match but taking extra damage because you arent really trying to dodge?
When you are strafe aim, you dont think about dodge, you are trying to adjust your aim by strafing according to your opponent. You make yourself more vulnerable and has high chance to "walk" into direct rocket.
Top tier players dont strafe aim, look at all those pro players doing dodge while aiming LG. They do MOUSE AIM and it should be the ultimate goal for anyone who wants to get good with LG.
Strafe aim only work against newbie players in public game. Too many players overuse this gimmick and think they got good. Until one day they run into a pro-player and wondering hopelessly why they got destoryed by the same method they have been doing.

I forgot to wrote, but i hoped that its clear, that eventually, yes, you need to focus on your dodge, and switch to mouse aim.
When possible, and applicable.
But for a complete beginner, i still think that strafe aim is good starting point, also doing strafe aim doesnt have to mean that you will ONLY receive damage, you can still strafe, and hit enemy, AND dodge his LG beam.
But, for the topic OP, take your time, and just play, it will come in time. Also it would help to know your:
- mouse
- mouse pad + mouse pad size
- monitor
- fps in game (is it stable 250/125 or varying)
- your 360/cm (how many centimeters on your mouse pads you need to make full circle in quake)
There are tons threads about LG on the internet. Most time people would suggest strafe aim and not mention anything about mouse aim tracking.
Strafe aim is a way to improve a player's aim, yes. There is nothing wrong if someone is able to improve his aiming skill.
The problem is that if that person got too comfortable and forgot all about the dodge, which is why I believe strafe aim is misleading. I think any player should start with mouse aim+dodge.
open console
type "devmap campgrounds"
then "god"
then "g_infiniteammo 1"
then "addbot bones;addbot bones;addbot bones"
don't ready up
now pull out your lg and start trying to lock on the bots as they jump around you, whatever percentage accuracy you get here subract 20 from it and that should be what you get in regular games, if you want to step up the difficulty then change to phobos bots, these will shoot rockets at you so you have to practice keeping your aim steady while getting bounced around
To make lightning beam center and thinner
cg_drawgun "3"
cg_gunX "-10"
cg_gunY "2.7"
cg_gunZ "-8"
Remove lightning flash and impact
cg_muzzleflash 0
cg_lightningimpact 0
Those setting will not make you aim better, but it might help you be more comfortable with your setting. I have seem all kind of good players using different set up so there is no best setting.

At the pinnacle, your LG aim can be so good that you actually compensate for your own dodging.
On the other side, if you are set out on the right track, the first step would be that you can find someone who has made an error with either a platform above you, or a jump pad, and hit every shot on them until they return to the ground.
These should be your starting and ending points. Onto the technique:
It would be obvious to say that the best way to improve LG would be to lower mouse sensitivity so that it is comfortable to track the movement of other players; however, that setting for a newer player would likely be so low that it would not be feasible to steer properly. This is because it is more difficult to make smooth game-like motions with the mouse at a higher sensitivity than it is at a certain low-sensitivity.
It would be better to start at a lower sensitivity where you are BARELY able to steer, and then once you can hit LG reliably at that sensitivity on falling/projectile or dodging opponents, you then raise your sensitivity so that other weapons will make sense. If you have your sensitivity too low, you will have a hard time hitting rockets-- this is okay you are practicing LG. Your sensitivity after significant amounts of training should be as high as you can accurately LG-- so that the travel time of your crosshair for rockets at oblique angles is minimal.
I've just described a repeatable training routine for learning how to LG. Best of luck.

edit: as an addendum, if you are playing with a mouse which has non-ideal behaviors there will be a limit to how low you can set your sensitivity. there's no way to compensate for this other than to train with more consistent gear.

I used to hit around 25% a few years ago. Now I hit around 50%.
