every weapon has a cooldown before you can switch to another after fireing, probably so I can't rail someone really quick then switch to shotgun and kill them

Weapon switch time = reload time + 400ms...so straight after shooting a rail you have 1.5s reload + 0.4s switch, nearly 2 seconds.

well you just described what i was trying to do....the rail gun is so nice but the firing time along with the cooldown makes it almost not worth playing unless i can switch quickly....

I like the cooldown time, it keeps the railgun where it should be used, long range

but i have yet to see an actual map that can be considered "long range" when anyone can close the gap in a matter of seconds

Lmao that's cuz map have certain areas so every weapon can be used as a situational in it. Also, a long map where the Rail Gun can be prominent would be the theatre of pain and eye to eye

Railgun should be used for example in Bloodrun. When you take yellow armour near teleport, and ur enemy is at megahealth or lightning gun. Another situation can be when you are at grenade near red armour, and your enemy jumps into the teleport.

These are two situations that you can use your rail as a long range. Once your enemy is further than LG reach, then you can consider rail gun :)

for weapon combos, rail is meant to come last in the combo, especially on fastswitch youll see its power, start with mg/pg/lg/ anything with no reload then finish up with a rail instead of other way around

Rail is for one time use long range sniping, then you should change your weapon to something more short ranged like LG or RL. Quake weapons are very situational, you can't go full sniping or full shotgun mode like in other games.
Game would be way better if the whole delay got removed.
Some modded servers have it, I think it should be in the default game.

q3dm17/The Longest yard is one example. Don't have any others off the top of my head, but there are a few more.

Not being able to switch weapons fast makes it "almost not worth playing?"

All we need is Sleight of Hand Pro perk in this game *kappa*

set w1 "weapon 5; bind x vstr w2; echo RAIL GUN"
set w2 "weapon 7; bind x vstr w1; echo BFG"
bind x vstr w1

i use this bind for me seems switches weapons out faster compared to individual keys and great for those rocket to rail combos

It takes a bit of time to learn which situations each weapon is for (and every single one is for certain types). You should use the railgun when your opponent isn't aware of you and is at range, is using a railgun himself, or when he would lose the advantage of higher ground/good cover by chasing you.
It's also good to keep a distance when the enemy is well-stacked and you are low, trying to stab him unexpectedly or surprise him from the side or back with distant rails. It chips down health quite fast and is a great equalizer if you can hit a few in a row.

OP, check out 'turbo' servers- its basically all i play on (lot of other people do too). Fast weapon switch is on so once your gun finishes the firing animation you can switch instantly, makes for some sweet combos. Air control is on too and some other minor adjustments, its a really cool mode/community. tba's turbo CA server is almost always populated
