Why is the "small" crosshair gigantic?

Rather than editing my cfg file, why is "small" in the options menu so large?

Depends on what type of crosshair you pick.

In standalone the small crosshair was small. Unless I pick a dot, it's huge.

/cg_crosshairsize <numberofpixels>, just type it in the console in game
