The "id Software" founders are not in "id Software" anymore.

AN BIFFED ELF!!!! Sep 19, 2014 @ 7:17pm
SPOILER: 1996 happened a long time ago. Also one could arguably say their death was in 1993 when Tom Hall left

I truly disagree with this common opinion: "id Software as we knew it is dead".

That's true - the four "founding fathers": John Carmack, John Romero, Tom Hall and Adrian Carmack are gone from id. However, I really think "the spirit" is still there.

This year saw a new Wolfenstein title get released, for the first time in the series, id Software had nothing to do with production, save for John Carmack's engine being used (which is still a lot if you ask me as far as contribution goes). However, the design of the game is still in accordance with "the spirit" of Wolfenstein - a fast action WWII shooter with occult elements. Machine Games certainly made the original team proud with their production.

Tim Willits is currently the lead game designer in id. This guy has been around with id since 1995 and I consider him to be a part of this "old-school" team. He may be a little controversial as a person, but as a designer he certainly knows what he's doing. I absolutely loved Rage despite all the negative opinions it got. The majority of those concerned technical issues anyway so if there is anyone to blame, it's one of the founding fathers - John Carmack (and he publicly apologized for Rage's issues in one of his Quakecon's speeches).

As was written above, the decline of "the original id Software" started still in 1993, when Doom was mid-development. That's when Tom Hall left the company. John Romero left after the first Quake around 1996.

This means that at least two of the games which were hugely successful were done with only two original members left - Quake 2 and Quake 3 Arena. The lack of those other two guys didn't make those games suck did it?

Remember all the negative stuff said about Doom 3? Slower pace, more horror focused than action focused, no flashlight attached to a weapon, generally too dark etc. etc.? Well Doom 3 was created by mostly the same guys who did Quake 2 and Quake 3 - John Carmack and Adrian Carmack, among others. It's not like "the original team" never made mistakes.

Id Software has my full support, they never failed me and they may be the last stand of first person shooters which promote fast-paced movement (unlike numerous CoD clones which promote hiding behind each and every obstacle before shooting......... how boring is that?!)

The ONLY difference post-Zenimax which really bugs me is how they don't release their source codes anymore. John Carmack did it and it was truly an act of kindness and generosity on his part. Because of those source codes we can still play classic id Software games on new machines due to fan-made source ports. However, as game design goes, id Software's "philosophy" hasn't changed a bit. It's only adapted to current standards and needs, but "the core" still stays the same and it's easily seen when you compare id games to other developers' games.

I still like IDs games, regardless of who is there or not. I'm pretty sure a lot of the original Half Life team wern't there for HL2 and won't be for if valve ever get round to HL3. Fresh faces always bring in new ideas anyway.

I haven't played Quake Wars, so I can't voice my opinion here.

As for RAGE, I honestly consider it the best single-player FPS I have played in my life. The game immersed me tremendously and balanced things "just right" for me. Bare in mind that it's my personal opinion and I have never experienced any technical problems with Rage that so many people have reported. In fact, the game ran smoothly for me on a rig that didn't even meet minimum requirements (GPU was supposedly too weak).

Same goes for Quake Live - I'm indifferent to the changes, it's still the most enjoyable arena shooter on the current market. What those changes did, is bring new players to the game. That's positive if you ask me.

Id Software know what they're doing.

Kevin Cloud still works at id if you want to be picky.
