What version of Windows are you running? I know us Windows 8 and 8.1 users are having issues.

I'm having the same problem.
Windows 7 x64
Intel HD3000 / Nvidia GT540M

I also tried to set XP SP3 compatibility on quakelive_steam.exe, but nothing has changed..

Solution that just worked for me:

1. Find the install dir in SteamApps.
2. DON'T try to run the executable, it will say "you must start it from the launcher". Instead, right click > Properties > Compatibillity > Windows XP SP3.
3. Restart the game through its usual icon / Steam.
4. Marvel at it running and "failing to contact Quake Live". Don't know if it has to do with this compatibility setting, but without it, it doesn't even show a loading screen for me.

Hope it helps someone with the same problem to actually run it.

Update: I added a rule to my firewall (Comodo) to treat it as a safe app and, at the same time, I changed the compatibility setting to Vista. Don't know if it was one of the changes that worked, but now "I'm in". Yeiiiiii... The joys...
i worked, ty.:SocialPolicy:

Quake Live (Steam vers) booted up and is running well on my win 8,1 laptop. Had no problems at all starting it and playing it.

Install directory where the game is installed, for example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Quake Live

and right click on
quakelive_steam.exe
