Quake live is the most skill demanding First person shooter ever made, if you learn to play this your aiming, movement and map awareness will increase not only for quake but several games.

I'm sorry, but this game is dead. And all you will find are 50 year old pedophiles. Go play tf2 they have a competitive community

TF2 is nothing but an autism simulator for bronies, furries and underage mic spamming kiddies, whole matches are pointless spamfests and skill is literally non existent, people who plays that trash is mostly because they really have nothing better to do in their boring lifes or because the loot.

If you're good at quake, you'll be good at pretty much any and every fps out there because Quake demands the player to be good at everything not just aim. Movement, timing, strategy all come into play and combine that with a fast paced gameplay and you can pretty much play any other type of fps.

34 year old here that began q1 and q1tf in high school and played almost every night from 1996/7-2001. No need to attack tf2 or trash other games.

Yes, there are transferable skills and other learned behaviors you can acquire and develop from playing QL. Though you do not have to exclusively consider QL, most arena shooters with a dedicating following and competetive scene (no matter how small) will help you build good, solid skills for your fps playing "foundation".

Aiming, reaction time, predicting or reading opponent locations and opponent plays are pretty universal and playing a good arena fps will be the best way to improve in those areas.

Some caveats, though, are player movement and control scheme + keybinds. An overpowering tendency to adhere to arena fps player movement may hinder you in slower, more "tactical" fps if it uses artificial means to restrict strafe modifiers and velocity. FPS games with many separate functions for individual binds might feel awkward for a while after you get used to a simple 2 mouse buttons + jump & sprint mode of play.

For even more growth yet no less important than actually playing is to watch tutorials from good players and pro players!! Often you get valuable insight you would otherwise miss or never think of! Skip frag vids, just watch tutorials!!

Mileage and relevance varies for each individual player but you are much more likely to benefit from skill building in arena fps first than not. Also, it's worth its own topic to discuss best ways to learn efficient communication and teamwork in fps play. That topic is a bit deeper than the subject of individual player skill.

fun yet unimportant observation.. i sometimes encounter players in various fps games that have jump bound to mouse2. this is my jump bind as well and in each case it was because we were all a bit older and had began playing before ADS/ironsighting was the norm. I am sure plenty of people have such a bind no matter what their age or what their first fps was but it's interesting to see that there are distinct practicies noticeably different between and attributal to each generation.

You would still need to adapt to other games though, it is not like you would be a CS pro after played Quake. Other games are just different and require other kind of skills aka knowledge.
