How prevalent are aimbots?
I’m the first to admit that I’m not very good at this. I really wish more people would play so it could actually use its advertised skill level matching feature. But whatever. My question is: In your opinion(s), how often are people using aim-bots? Like I said, I know I’m not very good, and a lot of people are way better than me, but sometimes I see a guy or two that just sweeps everybody ridiculously. Sometimes I’m getting tagged with rail shots mid air, as soon as I round a curve from quite a distance. It’s suspicious but.. impolite? Bad etiquette? to start hurling around accusations of cheating.

Rails in mid-air are easier to connect.
I'd say there's 1 aimbotter for 1000 players in QL

I take accusation as compliments but yeah it's better to stay silent if you're not 100% sure. I very very rarely run into aimboters but then again I usually always play with the same folks.

thats the safest way to go even though its free to play people doesnt mean much these days hhah...
Very, and there's a lot of denial of them in the delusion of a 'high level' game.

There are cheaters but not as many as new players think.
I would say the problems they are causing in QL are rather small since the community itself is rather small and kind of like "everyone knows everyone".

Before accusing people one should atleast see how good you can aim without the help of aimbots, an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIPYeaS9mp0

You can always record a demo of the player and send it to support, even if you are uncertain.

But isn't getting caught just kind of meaningless? They can just create a new account, right?

Yeah, this is the biggest problem with FreeToPlay games. Measures are taken to identify a computer or a connection but any hardware ID can be spoofed and an IP address is easy to change.

I've seen people claiming that the majority of players cheat. Such delusions make me laugh. Probably just a way to cope with incompetence.

I guess numbers of botters may vary depending on gametype, tier and even server location.
I mostly play DE CTF and it is pretty clean, also there are few experienced players always lurking around, catching cheaters. So called CSI QL 8)

There are a lot of fuzzy-aim cheats out there where the aim is fuzzed to look more human-like instead of snapping onto players. Though most players use ESP hacks instead of aimbots, where it displays a radar that shows you what players are near you.

Mid air shots can be easier after you get comfortable with the game. I myself hate people that have 75% accuarcy with the lightning gun, its a death machine when they can hit that well.

Accusing people of hacking in quake live is a shaky proposition at best. It can be very hard to tell the difference between someone who is cheating and someone who is just that good, because you have to realise that there are people out there who have been playing quake 3 and quake live for roughly fifteen years, and there are those whose natural talents are drawn towards arena FPS games because other FPS games just don't push their players skill to this level.

A good example is linked below; This is what top level CPMA gameplay looks like. To an untrained eye, it would look like they are hacking, but this is what the view from the top looks like. I'm sure the kinds of shots people are landing on you don't even come close to this level of play.

But of course no game is totally free from hackers/cheaters. As always, if you suspect cheating, spectate and record their gameplay, check their stats, check their hours, and if in serious doubt, report to admin.

I doubt there are 1000 players in quake. I've only seen one populated free-for-all game in my browser for the past few months.

This question always gets trolled hard by anonymous pros looking for a head to stand on.

Better to search YouTube for "quake live" and "cheat, hack, aimbot," and so on. Then you will have actaul video of the cheats these guys are saying don't exist.

There are cheats for most every game produced. No point in sugar-coating or denying it.

It doesn't much matter for Quake Live, anymore, as so few people are still playing.

@Deathlok :
There are around 750 players running QL through Steam at peak hours and more from the standalone client.

You probably need to change your server browser's settings.

As for cheats, we all know they exist. As you mention, there are cheats for pretty much every game out there. Have you actually seen anyone denying it?
