I've heard it's doable.. And probably it's the worst thing you can do if you want to be
completely crushed by players on a mouse and keyboard..

Good luck!

A controller with Hawken is fine but unless you are a pro gamer controller user and brilliant at quake , it will be a waste of time in fact even if you are you will still get beaten by most kbm users

So...um...how do I do it? The controller seems to work just automatically with Hawken and Unreal Tournament. But with Quake i get no response.

You need to type in_joystick 1 in the console, then press enter.
There are other options for deadzone and stuff that you can see if you press TAB after typing in_joy.
Then just bind stuff to the buttons in the settings menu.

It plays pretty good with a controller actually. I can beat new players in duel with a controller.
If you stay away from lg and just rocket spam corners and hold angles with rail you don't need that fast aiming.
Low deadzone and super high sensitivity is what works best I think.

You will never be a good player if you play with a controller though.

Ok....first I had to figure out what was mean by "console"! Anyway, I had to use seta _joystick "1" to get the controller connected. But is isn't really doing anything. I guess I need to specify what actions need to bind to what buttons and such. How do I do that?

Ok, after you set in_joystick to 1 (by typing in_joystick 1 or seta in_joystick 1)you need to type in_restart. Then it should work.

Ok so I did the "in_return" and got some technical stuff including a comment about Microsoft controller driver. But the controller is acting the same: the "look" is on the right trigger and no other button or thuumbstick or trigger is doing anything.

Yes because you have to assign every needed action to a button before you can play.
Go into the settings menu and do that.
Press escape > Settings > Input

Sorry for the late reply: ok, so I do the "seta _joystick "1" , the "in_start" and then the Settings. However I don't see anything under the settings' input menu that relates to the controller...what now?

There's nothing in the settings menu that relates to controllers.
Just rebind all the binds you need in the input settings to buttons on your controller.
Click on a field with your mouse and press the button on your controller that you want to use for that action.
You don't have to bind basic movement like forward, backward, strafe left, strafe right or look but you have to bind jump, attack, zoom, and every weapon that you want to use.

A tip is to use the shoulder buttons for shooting instead of the triggers since the triggers are alot slower to press down.
