If you wanna run high fps you can lower the res pretty low on CRT too without visual hit.
Those monitors work well on older GPU making the CRT build pretty cheap.
Good connexion was not a thing before ADSL came along, peoples used to go on LANs so that too leveled the playing field.
Q3a has been running smooth since its release the quest for high fps was not necessary above 120Hz for the reasons of monitor tech.
Now you can find second hand 144hz ISP monitors for less than 100bucks if you do prefer this non CRT option.
So if you think that top tier PC will magically improve your skill - no, it's not going to happen. Time spent to master something - is everything needed in most of life aspects, not only gaming. I've seen a lot of streamers that started playing Quake from the bottom ranks, years later they did not made it to the top of ladder, but got pretty high level of play.
Most of my issues stem from lag more than anything I was playing way better like 4-5 months ago till now, bought a new Ethernet cord hopefully it helps since last one was bent all over and had some holes in it, but not much one can do with only 1 upload. I've played with friends that kick my ass in ffa, but then when I hosted my own servers or was able to play on very low ping (25-30) and we dueled it was like night and day. I'm not a bad player, definitely not good either, but you wouldn't be able to tell that from my -12k k/d ratio and how badly I lag in ffa. :(
Wlel he's just complaining about now owning a 144hz screen. 60hz dont even sell anymore where i live and they're pretty cheap for a screen. If he can't get good on a 60hz screen, then even a 144hz won't help him.
Internet lag will always be there.
I've upgraded since then and my conclusion.
Quake 3 is still best of all smoothest fps ever bwahahaha you know it
