Arena FPS is P2W. (Hot-Take Warning)
Fair warning, alot of people are not gonna like what I have to say, but what I will say is undeniably true. Games like Quake, Unreal Tournament, well any competetive shooter now a days, is Pay 2 Win and here's why:

60hz is plenty enough to play any single player game with no issues, even games like Serious Sam with hundreds of enemies being thrown at you with no lag or hit detection issues, however you will come to find any multiplayer game that is even remotely popular & has a competetive scene, you'll see that is not the case.

You are at a complete disadvantage, you'll find yourself dying from weapons way faster than should technically be possible, you'll find yourself aiming right at someone and yours doing way less than it is supposed to or not at all, etc.

To even be able to play at a level that most players play at, requires 144hz minimum & 240 if you actually want to ever win regularly. lol

Just a monitor of that high of hz even in 2024 of only 1080p alone is 175 bucks, take into consideration purchasing a gpu and cpu to play any games at that high of fps, and it gets extraordinarily expensive.

Competetive multiplayer is no longer about who has better aim or skill, it's more about who has better specs/can reach higher fps, even consoles are reaching this point, where owners of Xbox Ones are in a disadvantage over series x's.

I remember a time not too long ago, where everyone basically had the same or similiar specs, & comp multiplayer was fair, whether that be xbox one or the ps3/360 generation. Everyone was playing at the same hz, with the same frames.

Now unless you make your game look like complete ass & play at 30 billion fps, games are unplayable.

There is nothing wrong with wanting your game to run better, I get that, but there is no reason guns should do exponentially more damage that are hitscan for some then others, just because you have higher hz/fps.

and it's not just a connection thing, I've seen this across many games, with as low as 35 ping and it's not every person I play against, it's a select few, which is lead me to see the truth, I've also played some of these games with the worst graphics possible to see how it plays out with maximum frames, and it's like night and day. I'll be standing still and someone will start shooting me & then I'd start moving and be able to embarass players when I have lower health, just cuz I am simply harder to hit cuz of the framerate difference.

It's broken and there should be some way to fix it, otherwise, online shooters will never be fair and always will be pay 2 win. (Which is ironic, cuz yall say you hate modern games for the same reason.)

CRT monitors balanced the playing field back in 1999 and can still be found if you are willing to look for them.
If you wanna run high fps you can lower the res pretty low on CRT too without visual hit.
Those monitors work well on older GPU making the CRT build pretty cheap.
Good connexion was not a thing before ADSL came along, peoples used to go on LANs so that too leveled the playing field.
Q3a has been running smooth since its release the quest for high fps was not necessary above 120Hz for the reasons of monitor tech.

Now you can find second hand 144hz ISP monitors for less than 100bucks if you do prefer this non CRT option.

There was a guy we have played with some time on instagib freezetag. I've been surprised when he said he's playing on old laptop with 60 hz, his rails were insane. But little later he bought new PC with high refresh monitor, and you know what? He didn't started to play like a god (this is what you think meant to be), his skill level stayed absolutely the same.
So if you think that top tier PC will magically improve your skill - no, it's not going to happen. Time spent to master something - is everything needed in most of life aspects, not only gaming. I've seen a lot of streamers that started playing Quake from the bottom ranks, years later they did not made it to the top of ladder, but got pretty high level of play.

Most of my issues stem from lag more than anything I was playing way better like 4-5 months ago till now, bought a new Ethernet cord hopefully it helps since last one was bent all over and had some holes in it, but not much one can do with only 1 upload. I've played with friends that kick my ass in ffa, but then when I hosted my own servers or was able to play on very low ping (25-30) and we dueled it was like night and day. I'm not a bad player, definitely not good either, but you wouldn't be able to tell that from my -12k k/d ratio and how badly I lag in ffa. :(

Wlel he's just complaining about now owning a 144hz screen. 60hz dont even sell anymore where i live and they're pretty cheap for a screen. If he can't get good on a 60hz screen, then even a 144hz won't help him.

Guy also has the most copypasted "oldskool" purist opinions and takes ever without any of the skill or experience that should come with it. It's actually impressive... Mesmerizing even.
Low Tier Bait.
sounds like a poor exuse to say you lack skill, you can pick up a 240hz panel for less then 300$, if you cant keep up dont complain. its like drag racing a prius versus a top fuel and getting mad because they spent the money to go fast. Its not a game problem , its a YOU problem... ive been playing quake for 24 years... ive gone from 60hz all the way up to 240hz.... and ive had a 120/144/220 panels before... IF you want to keep up..then your gonna need the hardware to help progress your skill if you want to be on the same playing field as everyone else..

Dude I played this on a 60hz tv through a laptop with a 630m and could still pull off tricks.
Internet lag will always be there.
I've upgraded since then and my conclusion.

Quake 3 is still best of all smoothest fps ever bwahahaha you know it
