Release source code so community can keep improving Quake Live
Seeing as this game is as old as it is, and that ID Software released the Quake3: Arena engine code (which quake live is based on) already back in 2005 under a GPL2 license, I think it's about time we request to get the source code so we can actually improve this game and keep it alive.

I volunteer to contribute.

Personally I would love to work on porting this back to a standalone native Linux client.

Deep steamworks integration makes this 200% unlikely.

Release it without steamworks like DOOM 3 BFG

Quake 3 is already liberated as free software under the GNU GPL 2, but only the engine. idTech has changed alot from 1999 to 2010. You could study some of the 2008 Valve Source Engine leaks but their codebase is changed alot from the original idTech.

QL is a decade old now and it's not exactly a big source of profit for Bethesda, releasing the source code as FOSS would be a good option. Hell, make the Steam version free as in price too, get more people playing.

1. We don't need steamworks, just remove it if it's so bad. The game does not require it to run.
2. Just using Steamworks APIs that are publicly documented as dependencies is not going to make the code bound to be proprietary.

We don't _need_ SteamWorks - but it's a good platform for newcomers to be introduced to the game. The main focus is to keep development active. There has been no updates what-so-ever to this game in many years. About time all the bugs are identified and fixed, and more functionality introduced.

Nah, that'll just lead to yet another community fracture and leave QL deader than what the whole subgenre already is.

if steam changes their license and releases source code then we're talking a different story.
Remove steamworks, idk why people make this such a big thing, DOOM 3 BFG is open source as well.

That will inspire me to get the full re-texture re-modeling project going.
