Why they changed that, I have no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idea. I think it's stupid that they removed that feature.
When this game was free, all you had to do was make a separate account and that was it. The game was completely free. Even back then (2014 to he exact), I dont remember a whole lot of people playing. I remember some sort of premium membership, but that might've been a different game.
Not exactly. The game for some reason became 10 dollars around 2017 or so before Quake Champion's release. Maybe it was around 2016, I dont know. All I remember is checking the store page of Quake Live and seeing that it was $10. Even when the game started costing money, Quake Champions wasn't free. I believe Quake Champions used to go for $20 or maybe a little more. It wasnt really expensive, and I can see why.
Now that QC is free, I see absolutely NO reason why Quake Live shouldn't be free again. I find it rather stupid.
It's funny how there's weird revisionism and reminisence about the old QL free days when there was much demand to drop this model and give them everything and how there's surprise that there's a price tag at the end of it...
so while maybe having it free now would be fine-ish, increasing a hacker problem would be an issue definitely, it doesn't change the fact that the current option is better than what the game had originally.
Edit: forgot to mention the "premium and pro" subscriptions locked off some gamemodes as well

I remember it very fondly, and I miss popping on after high school studies and fragging with random guys who were genuinely, 100% accurately at my skill level which was very impressive (again, only had issues with balance when joining the non-green-colored servers which denoted that they had stronger players). I loved how it had servers but somehow did skill matching better than actual matchmaking...
Anyway, it may be because it was free that you had a lot of newcomers to afps playing at the time. After a bit I got sidetracked and started playing Melee as my skill-based game of choice, haha, but I still love bunnyhopping and other stuff. I don't like elitists and people that aren't humble to new players (they feel like they are ALL young, which is like 75% true that they are young and don't know how to play because they weren't there for the classic-fps fad during the late 90s and early 2000s), but I love the games.
Nowadays, as for stuff that reminds me of classic fps, I play Sonic Robo Blast 2, a Doom mod with heavy emphasis on momentum and it is definitely inspired by "defrag" maps. There are similar tactics going on in a SRB2 level in many ways but its set-up in a more identifiable manner, using vibrant colors and layered stage design.
