Anyway, you won't master strafe jumping in only one hour. Some even never learn. Any yes, fast movement is an essential for this game, in almost any game type.
So, give the game a few hundred hours to learn all the basics, and another few hundred hours to fine tune them.
hey man, if you make a server with the tutorial map i can help you. i can try to explain.
It's a playlist that covers various different things...
So, load a map then walk forward while holding down "a" or "d", then glide (first!!) your hand in the chosen direction and jump, WHILE MAINTINING your hand in motion. if you flick and dont get the jump its because you are jumping before or not DURING your hand moving.
just try LONG slow strokes at first so you can actually FEEL what and how its accomplished. biggest thing i see people do is FLICK then jump, or jump then flick or stop moving mouse while jumping.
lol one last time, "WASD" while turning/ drawing a line, while those first to steps are consecutivly, JUMP.
hope that helps... its hard to explain over text but i think i got it covered. GLHFHFGL
Just load some map with long corridors and start jumping around them, at some point you notice you get the hang of it. That is how I have learned it.
1. When bunny hopping I sometimes forgot to keep the A or D button pressed. Instead I just pressed it upon jumping.
2. Once I corrected point 1, it still didn't work. I then realized that you must not keep the jump button pressed during the jump, but instead quickly press it just before landing. Since I have Jump on the mouse 2 button, I most of the time didn't even realize that I have it pressed.
After correcting this mistake, I now finished the entire part of the tutorial.
I think it's weird that - as a newbie to Quake movement - I haven't found a single tutorial on the internet that has _all_ the important aspects for strafe jumping in it.

Also, ql has an autojump toggle. So in beginning it might help you out as you won't need to focus on timing the jumps, since you can just hold it instead and focus on pressing strafekeys and turning the mouse to see what increases velocity and what not to get the technique down. Though I believe autojump's disadvantage is that in strafejumping it won't give you max speed, since you won't time the jumps.
LOL i kinda just assumed you were having difficulty with the mouse part but ya, you have to actually STRAFE to "STRAFE JUMP" lol
This was super helpful to me as well. Thank you. Holding down space while in mid air is obviously a bad habit that I am going to need to rid myself of.
