pql / turbo / cpma you don't press w after you first gain a little acceleration as that stops you accelerating and also prevents you from making turns as tight as just using left/right, your main control is via where you aim with your mouse at that point.

When not playing those mods in ql/q3a you don't have air control, so cannot turn tightly arround corners while strafing.
so you say without this mods its impossible to take tight corners with strafe jumping. that means these mods are also used in trournaments?
so just to get this cleared u never use w expect for the first strafe jump?
On straight lines it's always faster to use regular strafe jumping, even in PQL.
In PQL you can let go of W and turn with A and D and the mouse to accelerate around corners. If you turn too fast you will lose speed.
You can also use only W which allows you to turn sharper corners without losing speed and get a sort of slide but you won't accelerate like with A and D.
ok and what is cpm and pql?
In Quake Live there are 2 different movement physics.
VQL and PQL. Almost all servers are VQL. With VQL you can't turn corners like that.
In Quake 3 there are also 2 different movement physics.
VQ3 and CPM. CPM is to VQ3 what PQL is to VQL.
so does it make a difference if you are holding jump or every time pressing jump?
If you play ql using pm_crouchslide "1", you'll utilize the Quake 4 crouchslide movement. Crouchslide is best of both worlds basically. It's less dominant than full aircontrol of qw/cpma but more control than plain vq3/vql. Crouchslide is vq3 but you have the ability to make turns on ground without losing speed (aircontrol accel on floor) which naturally speeds up the gameplay quite a bit.

Yes you will lose acceleration if you hold jump instead of pressing it every time so holding jump is slower.
Holding jump is useful for going quickly up stairs and double jumping/chain jumping.

In vq3 movement (normal QL as well) you need a wall with a curved surface. Or you need to angle your initial movement just right. You can hit walls at certain angles and still keep all your speed while switching to the same direction as the wall.
