Quake low fps on good pc (SOLVED)
For some reason out of nowhere i am getting around 50fps in quake while i was getting 250 before.

CPU: i7 4790k @4700MHz
GPU: gtx 1080

I have had this problem before but it was even worse (around 30fps) and all i did was uninstall steam and reinstalled it and it worked normally without reinstalling but when i pasted my previous userdata folder back in the game broke again. Because i was tired i just left it like that for a month or so and just reopened it yesterday and it worked perfectly for some reason.
I played for a few hours and then my friend gets banned from my own server for no reason and when i quit remove the file with the ban list from the game and verified the cache the game broke again but this time even reinstalling steam fixed it only for a few minutes. This time when i reinstalled steam the game was running weirdly (main menu was running at max 60fps when before it was at 62, the game when capped at 125 ran at around 100 and when capped at 250 ran at around 180 but at both times stuttered) so i restarted my pc and then it was back to 50fps. I tried on my friends steam account and it ran better but still stuttered slightly but it would have been playable.

When i run the game there are fps drops in the main menu too and if i check the cpu usage one core is almost maxed out and the others are being used slightly but that is way too much usage just to be running the menu at 50 and when i enter the game the usage stays the same and the gpu hovers around 1-3% usage.

My theory is that the game is doing something in the background that is using up all the processing power and only allows the game a small amount of cpu to work with.

I have tried the 2 console commands that everyone recommends and they didn't help in the slightest.

I have tried a lot of other things but i can't remember all of them at the moment.

PLEASE HELP :(

Choose a map and a location on that map where you know you have an fps drop. Turn every graphical tweak you feel like looking up off or down. Go back to that place on that map. Compare FPS. Adjust accordingly. Don't forget to serpentine. GL :D

try doing some vid_restart

I had a similar issue that came up every alt tab that was fixed like that

If you didn't disable the Steam Cloud for the game (propeties on the game in the libarary list, updates tab) then it will have overwritten files when you start the game up negating any gain from a wipe.

Most FPS problems tend to be that the following need to be set

\com_idleSleep 0
\r_primitives 2

But if it's 50 constant, are you on a 50hz monitor? then you must have vsync set,
\r_swapinterval 0
\vid_restart
will turn that off.

Dual GPU machine? dobule check QL is running on the correct GPU.
\r_lastValidRenderer
will spit out what it's running on.

Double check the game resolution is what you expect.

Also, finally, Nividia Experience installation has an annoying habbit of turning on DSR at 4x, meaning the game is rendering at 4 times the resolution it's actually displaying at. Go to nvidia control pannel -> Manage 3d Settings, then look for 'DSR Factors' and untick all the boxes within the drop down.

com_idlesleep didn't change anything and same for r_primitives
i have a 144hz monitor
it is using my gpu but only about 1-3%.
nvidia experience is not installed

IMPORTANT NEW FIND
Threre are multiple ways the game can run
1. is normal
2. broken low fps
3. broken high fps
4. almost normal
1.normal can instantly be spoted when you launch the game the fps is going to be at max constant 62 or 60.2(has been a long time since i saw this so i don't remember) in the main menu and when i launch any map the fps would constantly be at 250.

2.The first broken way is that there are major fps drops in the main menu from the 60.2 to about 45 and everywhere in between when going from one menu to another (let say you are in the main menu and you click on settings). When i start the game the fps is constantly at around 50-55 without drops or stuttering but it feels like somewhere around 30fps. In this state the cpu usage is at a constant 24% not 1% up or down. For some reason if i set the game to use only 1 thread the fps would jump to around 170 but have huge drops and stutter a lot.(this is the same as the 3. broken high fps). With it using only 1 thread and me having 8 of them it will run at 12% cpu usage.

3. Broken high fps is basicly how the game runs with only 1 thread but for some reasson this time the cpu usage is at a constant 24% again and it stutters a lot same as with 1 thread(haven't tried setting it to 1 thread in this state because i haven't seen this state in a while). This state usually lasts for a low amount of time but i have seen it is more likely to happen on a friends steam account.

4. This here is the insane part!!!!!
The game runs almost perfectly with steam in offline mode. It runs ingame at around 230fps on every map (never 250 for some reason<--this is why this is the almost perfect way because normally i would get a constant 250) Like in every part before having settings at max or at the lowest doesn't change the fps (i normally have everyhing at the lowest). The important part is that there is no stuttering at all. The game runs smoothly without any problems. I was even able to host a game and a friend could join with the connect command in console but i was kicked after a while because i was in offline mode. The cpu usage in this is 16-19%.

If there is way someone could tell me what happens differently in quake while offline and while online that would be great. I will keep trying to find different thing but fixing quake isn't my biggest priority. But if someone is interested in helping me fix this either post on this thread or comment on my profile about this and i can add you if you want faster responses from me.

Currently my theory is that the games is doing some constant loops in the background, some tasks that never finish but for some reason most of them either end or not even start in offline mode.
The other theory is that the game has the cpu render things that the gpu should be rendering but that doesn't explain why changing settings doesn't help.

Forgot to say that i tried launching the game with default settings by disabling the cloud and deleting the cfg but had the same problem
ZeBear Jan 23, 2017 @ 6:56am
Ok tried some more things and found out that in offline mode it now runs at 190fps on every map so it that means that there is something worng with the game there too but just less broken than in offline mode

yeh, opened the game today and kabom stable 14-16fps? I've tried the usual commands nothing works im not gona try offline mode cause im too lazy to pull the cable. But if someone find a fix for this i would be thankful ) :steamsalty:

If you want to go offline just click on steam in top left and click go offline

yep thx, at best i can get around 63fps if im in window mode.. all other games runs as usual too so i dont think its perfomance rather some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up ♥♥♥♥ that reaches beyond my knowledge of the universe
spooN Jan 23, 2017 @ 9:31am
okay uhm, yeah the 14-16fps lasts for me for a while but when i see it reaches 62fps in the startmenu i can go to a server and get 250fps i guess its capped to 63 in the startmenu.. still wierd that i have 14-16 for a few min tho.

This makes me very suspicious that you perhaps have some 3rd party software interfering then , firewall / antivirus, there are some that have caused problems before (panda, comodo).

Oh, you have a 1080, do check you're using the latest nvidia drivers, there was a driver set not many weeks ago that had a bug drasticly reducing memory speed on the card in some situations ( http://techreport.com/news/30985/nvidia-375-95-hotfix-driver-addresses-pascal-vram-clock-bug ) perhaps it's that, or some power setting.

I have a problem very similar to this, would also like to know what you find.

Drivers are some older ones but memory speed is normal from what msi afterburner tells me.

What are the 3rd part softwares you're talking about and how would i know if i have them?
j4dedddd Jan 24, 2017 @ 6:44pm
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz
GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GT 730

The problem doesn't seem to be in the ability of my PC to run Quake Live.
It has shown to be capable of running it at medium-high settings at 250 fps.
It seems to run at either a stable 250 or a very unstable 50-60 fps.
I reinstalled the game for the second time today and it ran perfectly on the first boot-up.
After closing it and starting it up again, it had reverted to unstable fps.
