You don't want to use scroll wheel to switch weapons, as it takes too long and is very prone to picking the wrong gun. You don't want to be pushing buttons that require you to take your hand way off the movement keys either, so you can quickly press them then go back to moving instantly.

Thus it's a good idea to bind all your weapons to keys very near WASD, such as:
1,2,3,4,5,Q,E,R,F,Z,X,C,V
I don't go above 5 with the number keys. I find it requires stretching my hand too much.
Even 5 is kind of iffy for me.

As for weapons and their roles:

btw Before playing any other game like call of duty, practice on quake first so you can warm up with your aim, assuming you play on pc?

This discussion is 3 months old, no matter how much I tried I couldnt get better so I moved on. And its too late to practice on quake first because ive been playing CoD, BF, Arma, etc for plently of years on both console and PC.

That sucks. Must be some mental barriers from practicing similar but very different things. glhf in whatever games you stick too!

QChampions will be different, if you wanna try the free version when it comes out :)

Move in ratios! Because math and odds and stuff. Never aim where you shouldn't be aiming! 180 degress dead center! And also listen to sounds so you can count the steps then pounce!

See The Key of Mystery

List ye, O man,
to the depth of my wisdom.
Speak I of knowledge hidden from man.
Far have I been
on my journey through SPACE-TIME,
even to the end of space of this cycle.
Aye, glimpsed the HOUNDS of the Barrier,
lying in wait for he who would pass them.
In that space where time exists not,
faintly I sensed the guardians of cycles.
Move they only through angles.
Free are they not of the curved dimensions.
