[resolved] : (Monster) Regarding the server-room "Proxy"
I think I'm going to need some help with this. Cath mentioned the proxy is practically blind, so I just have to control my movements and make sure I don't make any noises. Yet when I get into the server room, even while carefully watching the floor for anything I might nudge (trash, etc), the Proxy randomly becomes enraged and homes in on me?

I even crouched in a dead end well away from anything that made noise, and simply waited doing absolutely nothing for a minute or two (was waiting for an opportunity to slip by), and then I hear a random scream and it comes lunging after me. I tried picking up random objects and throwing them off to one side to keep it distracted, but it ignores them completely.

If anything, looking at the Proxy and being within line-of-sight (despite supposedly being blind) seems to enrage it much faster even with the light turned off. My first deaths had it come sprinting out of nowhere after I stared at it's silhouette in the distance.

Before you ask, no, it's not the flesher/jiangshi thing from the underwater zone that I'm referring to.

EDIT :
The later Proxy encounters worked fine, so the solution may have been to simply close and reopen the game to flush whatever AI / item clipping hiccup could have been causing the monster to randomly enrage.

are you sure you are crouching? that one is all based on sound. I think you can even shine your light at it. Just crouch and move to the far back right corner, go out and hit the switch when safe, back to the corner, wait for monster to go, back to computer, then finall back to corner and make way to front of room once monster comes back.

Strange.
I do believe he reacts to your flashlight when you're really close to him, but if that was the reason he noticed you I'm pretty sure you'd know about it.

My suggestion would be (if you haven't made progress yet) is to just crouch walk your way to the computer, don't stall, and wait safely behind the nearby machinery while it boots.

This monster reacts to movement. You should be able to get very close to it without problems.
Make a few steps all the time watching its arms. Move until it starts to raise them up. Stand still until it calms down and start crying with arms in a front. Repeat till you get where you want.

You're teling the one at the proxy, or the "slender" one near the battery? The second just scream at random and you have to pass trought when she's "crying" keeping her hand on her face.
Or else if you mention the proxy itself, i don't know, he roamed as usual and comes to check only when i activated the reset button.

Whenever there are monsters around I stay pretty much permanently crouched. Hell, half the time I don't think there are monsters around I stay crouched, haha. It's not hard to tell, given your viewpoint is a lot lower and your footsteps are far less pronounced. Something was definitely wrong, though. A good few times I tried throwing an item over to a different part of the room and it simply prompted the monster to scream and then run to attack me (in a different direction to the thrown item, no less). Imagine a T-junction, with me on the left arm and the thrown item impacting on the right arm. The Proxy would run to the left arm each time, without fail. I even started to wonder if a place I visited earlier had an item glitch into a solid surface, and was creating an unknown racket elsewhere that was causing it to behave so strange?

I tried sneaking more aggressively but in the end it attacked me too frequently and randomly. I ended up having to sneak as far as I could go until it randomly enraged, and then sprint the rest of the distance. I managed to complete the server room after a few tries like this with only one hit left in me. I'm starting to think that something must have gone seriously wrong, and that maybe I should have restarted the game to make sure the AI isn't messing up somehow. All games bug out sometimes, right? The big red flag should have been my initial encounter when it ran the length of the server room to attack me the moment I got in the door while crouched. :P

Yeah, that's what I kept hearing. Only as per my post, there were a few times when it enraged itself and ran across half the server room when I was completely stationary and crouched, waiting for it to pass by. As in, literally hands off the keyboard stationary. There's a little dead-end nook to the right side (facing towards the router) that I tried to use for that, but it just kept getting mad and gradually closer each time.

Ah well, going back to play some more in a bit. If there are any other Proxy encounters I'll see if they're the same. Here's hoping it was just a bug resolved by restarting the game~

just turn on wuss mode for the part of game you have a problem with

Just a quick follow-up to confirm the next Proxy encounters were fine, and worked as people had been describing. It was just the server-room Proxy that was aggroing frequently and at random. I'd load back to check it again (as I'm sure having closed and opened the game again cured whatever AI spasm was occuring) but we don't have multiple save files. Oh well \:3/

I had to actually google that. You should probably elaborate on it a little more when you bring it up, because that sounded like a random childish taunt, haha. The thing is that even if I used the mod to bypass the faulty monster, then what about the following monsters? A horror game with it's hostiles rendered ineffective isn't really a horror game is it? I'm just glad the problem solved itself after I re-opened the game. I can only assume some item had got wedged inside some geometry and was causing the Proxy to enter chase mode when it detected that. Ah well.

Yeah I'm also having major headache with this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing, it's behavior seems so utterly random I can't tell what keeps enraging him so that he comes sprinting full tilt at me, homing in on my position perfectly even that I don't have a line of sight to it.

Even while I'm crouching and moving silently with my flashlight off it clearly seems to be constantly slowly homing in on my position, throwing junk to create distractions don't seem to make any difference either it's constantly on your ass.

I think in my case I solved it by restarting the game. I remember that some item had clipped into the floor somewhere nearby, so I wonder if it was creating a bunch of 'silent' noise that was triggering it in my case.

There is a lot of trash lying around on the floor that is hard to see.. i alerted it few times by tripping over random trash.

Just watch your step every item produces a sound when moving even if you don't necessary hear it yourself.

It's this engines quirk that even tho object didnt make an audible sound it did for the monsters AI

It can also hear button presses on terminals / lever activation and your flashlight turning on and off.

The problem was that no matter what made the sound, it would then home in on the player no matter how far away from the sound they had gotten. Even when throwing an item elsewhere, it would ignore the object and instead zero in on the player. For whatever reason, some of us seemed to have a very janky experience of the encounter.

Hmm guess i was lucky it only homed in when i made sound near it.
sonoket Nov 23, 2021 @ 11:58am
I recommend my strategy which was: Sprint and scream.
