I need some help with heating...
So I started a new game and was started in winter, I upgraded the heater and have the beds in the room with the heater. I keep fuel in it but everyone keeps complaining of cold and everyone is getting sick. there is just NO medicine anywhere in the game at this point that I have access too and I feel im going to loose because I dont really understand WTf is going on with heating

Heater can hold up to 6 fuel. Each fuel in it increases temperature by around 2 degrees for normal heater and 3 degrees for upgraded heater. One upgraded heater on 6 fuel can get you through winter without using meds. But one or two people might get sick and need bed rest. 2 heaters can keep you 15C+ 100% of the time.
OOOHH See, I was under the assumption that more fuel just extended the life of the fire in the heater, Ie kept it heated for longer, I did not realize that it made it warmer as well.

Thanks a ton, maybe I can save my people's lives now.

Yeah i assumed it was a simple 1 fuel per day thing, no indication that it did otherwise, i assumed everything beyond the first was like stacking wood next to the fire to auto load in more fuel.
That is one issue with this game, it doesn't adequately explain alot of things, this being one of them. All my people are sick and some are close to dying because of the heat issue

When your house is warm enough the temperature numbers display in red but when it gets cold (under 15 degrees) then the text turns brown. I really wish they had picked more obvious colors.

The improved heater is a godsend. It can still hold 6 fuel, but it gets the temperature indoors up towards summer levels in the depth of winter. No one will get sick if you have it. If you have the basic heater, keep it topped up to 6 at all times. People will still get sick, but not as much as in an underheated house. If you have it any lower than 6 you're asking for trouble.

I never upgraded the heater at all. And I played both starting in the winter and fall.

Fuel/Wood is a resource that's extremely easy to come by; electric parts aren't. I would only upgrade it way towards the end if your end game turns out in winter.

That being said, yes. The more fuel inside the better.

Indeed, if the playthrough starts and it's winter, it's really not worth upgrading the heater because by the time you do (I usually manage to around day 12) winter has ended.

Agreed. I don't even live in a temperate country so i'd have no idea how a fuel-based heater works anyway. 'Adding more fuel = higher temperature' isn't the most obvious thing out there.

My most recent playtest suggests Leo is right - you can make it through a winter start without the improved heater, although you may get a few low-level sickness incidents.

This was super helpful - thanks a lot!
