Knife or shovel?
Hi, I came across the issue that I am able to 2-hit a soldier with a shovel, but am not able to kill some squatter with a knife. Usually the NPC attacked with the shovels goes down and can be beat to death with one additional hit. If I attack someone with the knife, it leads to him being pounded back a short distance and parrying my next attack, so I'm stunned and ... yeah, end of story for my character.

Is there any sense in bringing a knif to a fight or is the shovel really so much better?

Can you stealth kill someone with a shovel or a crowbar?

knife is faster. When going on a hunt (for killing soldiers or raiders), then i use the knife. Shovel is too slow. And it helps to surprise them. Attack them from behind, wait in the shadows and wait, until they have passed you, then attack from behind. Or get a shotgun for close combat, or a assault weapon for range attacks...

The issue was, I met someone in [Location does not matter] and he was threatening someone else but not moving and as I approached his back to stab him, he immediately turned so it was open combat.

There it seemed like his fists were way superior compared to my knife.

in my very limited experience the combat seems to make little sense. Maybe once i played it more but i think it needs some tweaks.
It depends on the character : the Knife is made for fast and light characters who can react quickly.

But, for a heavy and slow character like Boris, you can one shot almost anyone with a Shovel, Crowbar or Axe, if you sneak-kill from behind or when in cover. Be careful though, engaging direct melee combat against someone with a Knife means death, if you have a slower weapon.

I prefer the knife for stealth kills. I have yet to even make a shovel. Later on in the game, a gun with some ammo works wonders, even if it is noisy.
