If it is seriously that simple then the game should not be so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ vague and instead make the containers private, which is what it uses to indicate no-touchy stuff in the other areas.
But then i went into the top right of the building and as i started looting (not stealing) from some rubble a guy killed me , he didnt look like he worked there , i assumed he was a patient , not sure what happened . Its a badly designed encounter whatever happened as i was none the wiser thinking "WTF" . No idea if he attacked me because i looted ot just attacked me.
All the other things that have happened make sense , this doesnt
edit -just to add i went back to the hospital with another char to try and work out what happened and someone killed me at the front door , maybe it was teh guard not sure . Whole thing left me scratching my head
When I came back the front guard shot me right away. The next night the guard was standing right at the spawn point where I left him and shot me in the face. Wasted two nights because of this random hostility.
It's actually killing the fun because I am playing as friendly, no innocents killed or robbed, and I've helped every person that has come to the door. But I am on turn 26 in the dead of winter (my heater is improved w/ full fuel and it's only keeping the temp at 16 & sickness is rampant) so I am buring through supplies like crazy. Ive basically drained all non occupied areas so far for resources, but all other places with any armed NPC's are hostile to me now. 1 more turn of this and I will be forced to steal from the old folks.
I could not trade at the military base, the garage I had traded at a half-dozen times before, the market, the hospital...in every case, I would walk up in scavenger mode, the trader would immediately shout about something and start shooting.
However, you cannot so much as touch/examine anything that's private or locked (i.e. doors on cabinets, which do not initially show up as locked)
Also, if you carry a weapon, I think you have to "unequip" it in your inventory by unchecking the checkbox on it (so checkbox is greyed out). Simply not having it selected at the left side of the screen is not enough. You'll still be seen as hostile. I don't do a lot of combat though so not sure about this.
Still, there are some oddities though. Once at the hospital I looted a raw food out of the barrel outside the front of the hospital and the door guard shouted that's mine and started shooting.
I walked all through a bunch of patient rooms once and nothing happened to me. Perhaps I was just lucky and no one saw me. I wasn't really paying attention.
I think there are some bugs in the behaviour of other survivors about looting and what is/isn't public. Obviously entering certain rooms for certain NPCs is a taboo. But sometimes I can loot non-private loot in front of people and sometimes it seems to go poorly.
Or perhaps it isn't a bug, but there are just metrics in play for which we players have no indicators to understand. So it feels like a bug.
In next game i went to hospital by Katia and get few woods from public containers. Than just walk over first floor and some body kill me outside of my fov. She has no weapons at all and was in scavanging mode.
I has no idea, why guard went hostile, but it's really sad to loose a teammate for no reason! It's ruined all the good game for more than 6 hours (((
I think devs shold do thm with this. at least if this is "potentially" safe location if u dont go bad, then you shold be notified before u can do thm wrong.
