How exactly does heating work in winter time?
So most recent game just ended after about 5 days and I am scratching my head wondering why. It was the winter time so understandably it was cold. I made two of the heaters and had more than enough consumables to keep them burning constantly.

I am not sure if this does anything but I placed the beds next to the stoves as well. None of my team was complaining about the cold. Next thing I know, all three of them froze to death over night and the game ended.

So I ask, is there some kind of trick to keeping them warm? I am just so confused as to how they all died if I had heaters going.

You only need one heater... the temperature is determined by the number of fuel... 6 is the max and provides the best temperature.... the key is to upgrade it as fast as possible.
I've only ever built one upgraded heater, keeping an eye on it, and keep it full (6 fuel) like the previous poster said. I'll have one of my guys standing next to it just before the scavenging run starts and keep clicking on the heater so it's full for the night.
You need to make a hatchet (in Improved Metal Workshop Level) to chop shelf and table then you'll find many fuel or you upgrade one heater,it help you as well
The previous replies were correct. The hatchet makes it easier especially since you can chop up some stuff right in your shelter. I've done both 2 regular heaters and 1 upgraded heater. The 1 upgraded heater has about 50% more output than one regular heater and burns fuel more slowly. At worst, I've had to settle for 14 degrees with the upgraded heater alone running at full blast (6). With two regular heaters I can always get it to 15 or higher, but the fuel required to keep it going is a lot.... so I'd say go with 1 upgraded heater if you have medicine, and 1 upgraded and 1 regular if you don't (maxing out the upgraded one before putting anything into the regular one). Be sure to end the day at 15 degrees or higher, and try to keep it at 15 or above always.

edit: The characters diaglogue and color changes suggests that sickness risk increases when the temp is below 15 degrees... not sure about freezing, I've never had anybody freeze.
I prefer to make 2 normal heaters instead of upgrading one. I think electronics are too precious. Though I guess it depends on how much fuel you have.

I normally put enough fuel in the heaters so that when the day ends, the temp is at least "red" ie 17C or something like that. Ideally keep it a bit warmer than this.
I definitely don't think one heater is enough when it starts getting really cold. For me, with an upgraded heater with full fuel(6). The temperature would usually be 13-14.
Yes, the basic heater on its own (even maxed out) is nowhere near enough. An improved heater on its own is usually enough, but the temperature will still occasionally drop below 15C. So you might need a second heater. For some reason, even a termperature of 14C is enough to trigger sickness, although people shouldn't freeze to death.
I love how they tell you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about how much fuel you need. i had 20 fuel and was like ok, thats plenty, for several days. Then the winter comes and apparently you ahve to feed the heater 6 fuel a day, so everyone died of cold 4 days later TFW?
