Assembling Your Own Team?
Is there ever an option to hand-pick each member of your team? I completed the game once, and I see more options available now for new members, but they aren't that great. Do we always have to deal with "dead weight" team members?

Also, is 4 the max members?

I imagine that the idea is that if you could hand pick then it would inevitably lead to super groups, whereas the point of the game is to deal with what you have and work around those challenges, including the team members with which you are presnted. Not that I cannot see the allure, of course; but the point is that I am not sure that we would ever see an option of that sort as it would go against the design of the game.

I don't believe that you ever start with more than four characters; but I have yet to see a game where, with additional characters moving in as the game progresses, we ever reach a point where it surpasses five.

I wouldn't call any of the team members dead weight as they can all serve a purpose; though to be sure I sometimes don't have a need of the benefits that come with certain team members depending upon how I am playing or when they show up at the door.

I agree that having some of the lesser characters in the team provides an interesting challenge, which I like in some aspects. I'm just looking at the start up options so I know them better.

From what I can tell, you can't pick your own chars. Imho it's better that way. Ability to pick your own starter "dream team" would took away a big chunk of replay value from the game. But it's just my opinion. I consider "dead weight" like some sort of challenge. Do I keep them (even allow them in) or do I sacrifice them in some dangerous situations.

Some interesting things in here:

Especially the part where they write about summer/winter/any season starting characters.

Edit. Ok I actually put my glasses on and I've read about 1.2 patch and ability of picking chars after you beat the game once. My mistake :)

I beat the game once, I can't pick my own chars, but I do have more "teams" to choose from.

I just tried starting in winter: My people kept getting really sick, one got terminally ill and froze to death despite the improved heater that was cranking. Another got so depressed she split. I was down to one (Katia) who was severly ill. Then Bruno joined, and immediately got sick then terminally ill. Now I have two people who can barely walk! Starting in winter is tough!

Good replay value :)

You need one fully upgraded heater and one smaller to survive winter. Best temp. is around 18 celsius. When it's warm people don't get sick that easily. Also make a hatchet and chop down stuff for fuel/wood on scavenging trips. Collect mainly fuel at first since it stacks up to 4.

On my first playthrough I survived 37 days, made some wrong choices :(

Any yeah you can choose a team not individual chars.
