Use what you think you'll need most, a good scavenger with some home maintenance folks. combat is if you like that type of hostile play style, however I've found Marko to be good for combat and scavenging. To find your best combo you need to play with the differant characters and find the ones you like the most.
If you want my all star picks;
for a 3 survivor start: Marko, Katia, Bruno.
for a 4 survivor start: Katia, Arica, Bruno, with either Marin or Marko.
Of course, for me part of the challenge of the game is having useless* survivors in my party, to balance out having to figure out how to use said useless* people.
* ("useless" being anyone I did not name, and "useless" in the sense of less desirable than another character. not that said character actually does not do anything."
Top:
Marko, Katia, Roman
High:
Boris, Bruno, Marin
Mid:
Pavle, Zlata, Arica
Low:
Emilia, Anton
Bottom:
Cveta

Boris: Highest carrying capacity in the game. I don't care that Marko scavenges faster, and runs normal speed, when dealing with non-combat zones, more space is always better. Early game tends to start you with the least lethal options, more often then not, so getting as much as you can, as soon as you can, really speeds up everything.
Katia: Not everyone puts her up high, but she does something better then anyone else can: Trade. Sure, a couple other people might not suck at it, but streching EVERYTHING you're going to just toss away to a trader at your house OR out in the world, really does go along way. With her, I can usually turn say, a couple random bottles of moonshine and the diamonds from Sniper Junction into all the wood/components on our travelling friend when he shows up. Getting like 20 wood/35 Components early game is huge, basically says 'what of anything would you like to do this turn?'
Arica: I prefer her to anyone else out in the world fighting. Yeah, Roman is a better fighter overall, but more then her base sneaking, is how it plays into killing people. Anyone can hide, several people can one shot people from hiding, she runs basically silent, and can use the crowbar/shovel/etc. at a level that doesn't auto alert people. Boris can't do that say, so even though he carries a lot, can actually fight, sometimes using a sawblade/crowbar to even get into the place, has people coming down to check out the noise. Those circles are so managable on her, they really need to be close by, and one of the cardinal directions (more or less) around her to hear anything. THE ONLY drawback to it is, you can't run to get someone's attention and then hide before they show up, but small trade off for never being noticed till you want to be. ;)
Roman: Best guard. Nuff said. :D
Marin/Bruno/Pavle/Zlata, are situational to me AT BEST. Marin is the most useful, only because using less resources nets around the same as Katia trading for more. the difference being she trades for anything (Bandages, Arica is severely wounded!), he just makes the benches/some stuff cheaper. Of course, we could argue he can get you to MAKING your own goods faster. ;)
Bruno only matters till you upgrade that stove. Not the toughest of feats since once the stove is made, it does not rely on anything else to up, just get me most basic stuff, and boom, better stove.
Pavle only matters when you need to run. Since normal runners can do Sniper Junction fine really, it's really only helpful on big maps to search everything/run the ♥♥♥♥ away when stuff goes really bad while sneaking.
Zlata keeping people happy-(ish) is 'good', but are you planning on being sad? If you just manage decisions of what makes people sad, have a radio, and maybe some coffee/smokes, she's really not there for anything.
Others don't really matter to me. I like them, and hell, if i'm playing a Cveta/Anton game and Marko shows up, I throw a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ parade, but most times, i get by fine without him. :p
Marko - pound for pound the best scavenger. Yes, Boris has more carrying capacity, but it's really not worth the hit to speed he takes for those two extra slots. Marko can gather up an entire map's worth of items and consolidate them into one location in a single night, and then you can pick and choose full stacks of resources to bring home. (Always gather all your items into one pile before taking stuff home. It saves you a lot of trips, making sure everything is stacked, and lets you pick what you NEED instead of just whatever you grabbed first.) Only a few locations, like the Construction Site, are so big that Marko needs multiple nights to clear them. Boris simply can't match Marko's efficiency.
Katia - Anything you lose from picking Marko over Boris, Katia can make up for you. The boost she gets to bargaining will usually let you clear out the trader of materials if you have a moonshine still going. Trading for most of your materials means that Marko can bring home more valuable items instead of filling his inventory with boards.
Marin - He stacks with Marko's bringing in tons of items and Katia's bargaining for even more by cutting your crafting costs significantly. He doesn't save on food for you like Bruno does, but who needs Bruno? Katia can trade for vegetables and fertilizer, if necessary, with Marko regularly bringing in more. Add a couple traps to that, and the only thing you ever need to worry about is water and fuel. Fuel is only 1 per meal with the good stove anyway, and all you need for a rainwater collector is filters. Which can be made with materials, which Katia and Marko keep you well-stocked in. Marin will get you going faster, get your shelter banditproof faster, get you upgraded faster...there's no understating his importance.
Roman - Roman is the best guard, but his utility is a lot more than that. He's also the safest bet for combat. Arica can be just as effective, but her not being able to lure enemies with sound is actually more of a drawback than an advantage. Stealth kills are the safest and easiest, and provided you're not running, Roman is better at them because he can arrange situations where enemies walk right into them, with far fewer risks than Arica has to take. There are plenty of hostiles to kill that actually boost your survivors' morale, negating the need for counselor characters - add to that your wealth of supplies collected from the other three, and from trading in the excess weapons and ammo Roman's combat sprees collect, and you can also afford to do good deeds whenever people need it for further morale boosts.
I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that this is pretty much the ultimate team. Any one is a serious boost to their group. A combination makes for a very strong survivor party. All of them together? You're treating yourself. It's pretty much the opposite end of the spectrum of the brutal challenge runs people do.
Arica's inability to lure with sound is indeed her biggest drawback - so for me, its Boris for combat. Consolidating a map into one pile in one trip is rarely an issue as you usually end up with full stacks from less than the whole map, so Boris can clear out a map better than anyone because of those 17 slots. So my ideal threesome starts with Boris.....
Then its a tough call between Marin, Bruno and Katia for the other two, but any two of those works well with Boris.
(basically I stopped picking Boris as he makes the game way too easy).
As for OP's question, if you just want to choose from the custom stories, choose the first group, which is Katia/Bruno/Pavle. Because after several runs I find that the first run is the easiest (low level of confrontation and mild winter), and is most suitable for a pacific strategy.
I kept Roman fed and loaded with cigarettes, but he still seemed intent on smashing up the house. I did notice he calmed down a bit after his 'Roman got drunk' episode, so wonder if thats the key, just get him drunk every now and then. But yes, not an easy character.
edit. Just dealing with Roman smashing up the house again - got him drunk - didn't help, but as soon as I let him out the house to go kill something he calmed right down. Seems he's like a doberman - can't just leave him in the house all the time, he's got to be let out to go poop on a few things.
In my Roman/Katia playthrough (with Kalina joining on day 8), I had Roman content for nearly the entire game. That was until he was killed 5 days before the ceasefire, which destroyed the team's good mood and made me depressed irl. ;_;
