Can you loot corpses?

So I just got this game from a friend and it's pretty interesting. One of the things they try to do for "immersion" kinda ends of ruining it in some ways though. They don't tell you anything about the game to start so you end up just sort of fumbling around with the interface and doing stuff by accident it'd make no sense to do by accident IRL... I did eventually get the hang of a lot of things, and even managed to avoid being a murderer for my playthrough so far. I encountered some friendly armed looters at one point and we shared the loot... or rather, they didn't loot anything and left it all for me... Then later on I went to another place and ran into some guys who immediately started chasing me with their guns. I avoided them, and then managed to get Marko to go all shovel ninja on their asses... Oddly the second guy I dug a hole in the head of walked right past his buddy's corpse while searching for me and didn't even react... I guess Marko didn't get too torn up about killing a pair of psychopaths who tried to shoot him on sight... Anyway, two of their buddies started chasing me so I ran for it and just before I got out of visual range I noticed that the corpses had hand icons over them, but they were different from the normal open hand ones. I was wondering if those are to let you loot the bodies, or just to carry them.

I mean, I wouldn't mind getting ahold of a working assault rifle and handgun to ward off looters, but I get the feeling that this might be another gamey attempt at "immersion" and you can't actually pick up the weapons off slain foes... The bodies were gone the next night, and their buddies were unarmed.... Ironically they gave me a much tougher time than the guys with guns as I thought, "Well, I'm armed and they aren't. I can take them." And then they just punched me over and over while I stood their holding my shovel like an idiiot.

You can, but you're probably only going to ge tthe gun, ammo, knife, and vest out of it. Even then, might be safer making your own.

Well, I'd already killed both of those guys without any trouble. I just didn't notice the loot icon until I had moves past and triggered their pissed off buddies to come running after me.

If you see someone using a gun, you should be able to kill them and take it.

You can't loot nor do lootables show up in combat mode. Also corpses disappear (with the exception of dead player characters so if your character(s) die while looting you can go back to get your stuff back) if you leave the area so make sure you check each corpse before leaving.

On the left of the screen you can select scavenge or your equiped weapons. You have to select scavenge to loot the bodies. If he was armed, looting the body will get you his weapon and some ammo if it was a firearm.

The shovel isn't a very good weapon though (and not an essential tool either)
The hatchet however...

How can Marko be a shovel ninja without a shovel? Respect the shovel.
