Is "huge amounts of food" a translation issue?
...because I go to a place that claims it's got huge amounts of food and all that is in any cupboards are either wood or miscellaneous parts. In fact when all my men are starving, it seems the most food that I ever find to even steal is one or two carrots and maybe a tin of food.

Well, it may be in a place you haven't uncovered yet, and might be locked, grated, etc. Huge amounts of food usually means a few cans, some veggies and a few muttons, so... It is not like heaps of it.

I think I've seen "some food" which I imagine to be 1 or 2, then "a lot of food" which is 3 or 4" and then in my mind the "huge amount of food" would be 5+

I'm clearly just playing this wrong. I just got to day 20 only to have 3 people die right there and the last one leave after he spent the previous 4 days beating the hell out of everyone and complaining how tired he was.

Every game I play ends up like the last half of The Shining.

You will be ok. This game has a huge learning curve. Don't give up, try some more setups and play to your guys' advantages (like use Bruno to cook, Katia to shop/sell, Pavle to scavenge/do dangerous stuff cause he can run away quickly, etc.). Don't take it as a military game and you will be just perfect.

The shelled? school is a good example of what Dobrev means. There's a lot of food - But it's hidden away behind a grated entrance (you need the one-use sawblade). It also has a chance of having some food in a secret/hidden loot pile in the kitchen - see one of the room to the right of it? for the clue.

Reading my mind, mate... Reading my mind. Same with many other buildings, very few have easy access to food.

The various dwellings (Quiet House, Apartment Building, etc etc) will have food easily located in open locations, but the various destroyed places will usually only have these items locked away somewhere for you to find. Just make sure you explore everything and anytime you find a locked or grated door, write it down so you remember and can go back to it with the proper tool (lockpick or sawblade).

Man, I haven't even been able to build a table that lets me make a saw yet, haha.

Also, as the war goes later unoccupied locations run out of loot (bullet casings/gunpowder are the only things that seem to stay). So I would focus on looting areas with no people or friendly people first, because loot piles inside buildings with bandits/thugs won't get looted.

It probably wasn't late enough in your game for this to be the case, but it happens.

How many days does the war last? Is that random? I've gotten to 20 days at my longest.
