Thanks for the reply. Tried the above steps several times but same issue. Also tried to generate a log file as in the link but can't find the ConsoleOutput file in the MacOS folder. Unless I'm mistaken log files are only created the next time you play the game but the issue is we can't start the game to begin with?
Only contents in my MacOS folder are libsteam_api.dylib and a Terminal file titled This_War_of_Mine containing the following:
2015-04-29 18:21:26.338 This_War_of_Mine[5322:507] OS X Version: 10.9.5 (0)
[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; no appID found.
Either launch the game from Steam, or put the file steam_appid.txt containing the correct appID in your game folder.

Hope this helps. Game worked fine until update yesterday.
@maici Thanks for providing your steps to reproduce, I must say I'm a bit confused with all those restarts it has needed but I'm happy that it works just fine right now :)
P.S Worked just by:
1. Delete
2. Reinstall
3. Veirfy Properties
4. Open
I did everything listed and the game still will not load, even though running the "verify integrity of game cache" said everything was fine and was there but when I tried to run the game I got the exact same error message. There was a link to a thread on how to find what's on the terminal for the game and this is what I saw:
michelles-mbp:~ Michelle$ /Users/Michelle/Library/Application\ Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/This\ War\ of\ Mine/This\ War\ of\ Mine.app/Contents/MacOS/This_War_of_Mine ; exit;

Also when I started up the terminal, the game tried to load and I saw the window for it on my screen but it disappeared within a few seconds. I've tried the listed steps multiple times, even restarting my Mac and Steam multiple times. Nothing is fixing the issue for me. The game still will not load. It was working just fine before the update but now it seems the update has completely broken the game for Mac. I've never had this problem before with the previous updates. There are no viruses on my computer, I've checked, and all of my other installed games run perfectly fine. What's the issue and is it going to be fixed? It's more than a disappointment that this update is the one I was looking forward to and it breaks the game.
The extra restart after reinstalling did it, though now every time I exit the game I get a problem report saying that the application quit unexpectedly.
Exact same issues as this poster. Deleted local files and reinstalled, got the error message again. But the second time I hit play, it started up. I guess this means I shouldn't quit the game unless I want to spend an hour or so re-installing it every time I want to play again...
ETA: Okay, it appears that restarting your computer is indeed critical to the process. After re-installing and verifying the game cache, I was still having problems, but once I restarted, the game began functioning normally again.
The process I used:
1) Right click This War of Mine in the Library. Go to Properties.
2) Go to the Local Files tab.
3) Delete Local Game Content. (This doesn't affect your achievements or, as far as I can tell, your game data, so no worries.)
4) Re-install the game.
5) Return to the Local Files tab, and this time Verify Integrity of Game Cache.
6) **RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.**
7) The game should now be functioning properly.
