Just took a picture of my self lol

photoshopped it to where it looks like the rest of the in game characters with the black and white look with some cracks in the pictures

Now my question is what size should the file be?

for example 500 x 500 pixels

I know thats to big but what size? Anyone?

In the new patch info it says it needs to be jpeg and 500x500, basically a square and you put it in the new folder, I think its called avatar or something.

Thanks I already figured it out. as long as its a box of any size it will work.

lol all you have to do is just make the picture black and white with a little black circle around the sides of the picture. Then it will almost look like it was part of the game. You don't even have to add in cracks in your image the game does that for you haha.

Idiot guide to creating your own personal character (Reference guide for everyone else)

Step One: Creating a photograph.

There are many ways to create a digital photograph to use in this game, the first and best way is to use a digital camera, simply take a photo and use the correct cable to connect the camera to your computer to access the file. Most phones also have a camera built in also. Simply take a selfie, and either connect your phone or send yourself an email containing the photo.

Lastly for those who don't have a working camera or their phones can't take photographs you can use your web camera to take the photo instead. Simply go to this webpage, http://www.cameroid.com/snap.php, give it permission to access your web camera and then take a photo (Icon on the right of the screen). It will then ask you if you want to download the photo to your computer.

Step Two: Editing the photograph

No matter what type of photo you've taken you will most likely need to edit it to get it down to the right size and file format. Open up your preferred picture editing software, Photoshop for example and open the file. If you don't know what editing software you have or don't have any then look up Paint.NET online and download that, it's free to use.

Once you have the file open on your computer and have your photo ready for editing use whatever tools you are comfortable with to get the picture down to 500x500 (Width and Height) pixels. I would recommend using Resize option but you can also use the rectangular select tool if you are good at that. Take your time with this step and make sure that it looks the way you want before saving it in the right format (save it as a .jpg file in the save screen).

It might be a good idea to also save it as a new file in case you have to go back and change anything later on. Don't worry if the picture isn't grey like those in the game, the game will take care of that for you.

Step Three: Placing the file in the right folder so the game can use it.

In your steam library you will find the game. From there right click on the name of the game to open up a smaller drop down menu and from there select properties. A whole new menu will then show up with several tabs at the top. Go select the LOCAL FILES tab and then BROWSE LOCAL FILES... in the menu below.

A window will pop up showing the location on your computer where the game was installed. There should be a folder there called Portraits, double click on it to open it. Normally this folder is empty but we will be putting our custom photos into it. So go select your prepared photo and drag it into this folder. Nearly done!

Step Four: Creating your character.

Now start up your game and select Write My Own Story. In the new screen there should be an option in orange called Define New Civilian, click it. From there you should be able to create your own character. In the section called portrait click the arrows to the left and right until you find your custom photo. Now all you have to do is fill in the remaining details and you’re done!

Remember when you've created your character that you still have to select them before they are added to your custom story.
