Other games like this?
After 71 hours of play time, I finished This War of Mine with all starting groups (had 2 failed playthroughs, too, including my first). I must say... this was easily the most captivating game experience I had in a long while, and it's without any doubt, my game of 2014. Good job, 11 bit and anyone involved making this masterpiece!

So now, I'm wonderinf what similar games there are. I'm thinking about survival games set in a realistic environment (i.e. not sci-fi or zombie apocalypse). It could be more open-ended like TWOM or have a more linear story like Valiant Hearts. Combat isn't a dealbreaker, but it's not necessary either. You know, something similar to TWOM in atmosphere, not necessarily its gameplay.

Hmm i don't think there's many games like this but the closest I can think of is Zafehouse Diaries (I'll call it ZD from now on) but even then they're a lot different especially gameplay wise. The plot of the game is that there's a zombie apocalypse (so original kappa) and your group of survivors are the few people that remains in the town (other than the hordes of zombies).

I know you said you don't want zombies but this game isn't like normal zombie survival games and the atmosphere and feel is the closest thing I ever played compared to TWOM.

There are 3 different game modes, the first one (they call it easy mode) is an endless mode and you start with 1 survivor (you can recruit more as the game goes).

The second mode (they call it normal mode) you start off with a group of 5 survivors (other than the first mode I don't think you can recruit survivors in the other modes) and got a tip that there's a vehicle somewhere in town that you can patch up (you have to find the parts and the vehicle) and escape the town.

The third mode (they call it hard mode) is almost the same as the previous mode except instead you get a tip that a rescue helicopter is coming to town but you don't know when or where. So you have to find clues hidden around town about the location and time and also find a radio (to contact it I guess?) in a time limit (when the helicopter arrives and if you fail you lose I guess, I never actually played this mode before)

The only similarity is that:

1) You manage a group of survivors in a apocalyptic situation

2) There is resource management as you scavenge (you also have a limited inventory space, although in ZD the limit is based on weight rather than slots and you can increase it if you have a backpack)

Other than that the gameplay is a lot different:

1) Instead of directly controlling the survivors you instead give them orders what to do (cook food, board up etc) and the game calculates it depending on the situation for example you order survivor A & B to go kill zombies around the house, the game then calculates based on their health (whether they're injured or not) and what equipment they have available (if they have a baseball bat or a gun or so on).

2) The entire game is an interface of a diary and a map (so you don't see any action, or zombies for that matter), although I'm fine with this (I thought it was interesting) I know a lot of people that find this a big turn off which is understandable (since all the action is shown in words and some sound and visual effects)

Look up some gameplay of it and decide for yourself whether it's for you (although let me say actually playing it and watching it feels very different).

Take a look at games "Frozen State" and "The Long Dark". They are somewhat similar to TWoM. True that the first one has "zombies" but (imho) they fit nicely in whole concept/theme of game.

However, both are Early Access games so keep that in mind. I'm keeping an eye on those two, we'll see where they're going.

Stranded Deep (it looks rather interesting, but it more of a "Castaway-survival" type of game. Currently still in Early Access though):

I know you said "not sci-fi or zombie apocalypse", but I still think the following survival type of games could be worth a look (they have Demos you can try as well):

I can't think of any game that's actually like this game.

although, even though it breaks most of your criteria, I'd say that if you liked TWOM, you might want to check out Faster Than Light. It's very different than TWOM, but it hits alot of the same 'notes'

in TWOM you're in an uncertain situation, the game is broken up into little segments, your cast of characters changes, you're sometimes presented with decisions along the way, you're constantly scavenging for enough stuff to upgrade your outfit, time is always against you, etc. FTL has all these things, just in very different way. Also I think it's a fantastic game in its own right.

The Long Dark is a sandbox survival game set in an open world of beautiful artwork. You can choose to combat wolves in the the two more difficult modes or have them avoid you in Pilgrim mode. After playing for a couple hundred hours I can safely say it does NOT feel like Early Access players are disappointed by a lack of content or glitches. A new update is expected in a few days that will nearly double the size of the world and there will eventually be stories too. I highly recommend it to fans of the survival genre.

Thanks for the answers, although I'm a little disappointed by the lack of similar games, but that's not your fault. I guess this only highlights how unique and needed This War of Mine was.

I'll probably look into a few of these, even though as I said in my original post, right now I'm more interested in realistic settings, as I'm really tired of classic post-apocalyptic / sci-fi stuff and zombie apocalypses. I'd stay away from early access games, though.

AHHHHH STOP SHILLING YOUR CRAPPY INDIE GAMES
There is a kind of similar game in its genre but its kind of old and u will spend some time making it work on win 7,8,10.

GORKY 17. http://store.steampowered.com/app/253920/

I can say a lot about gorky but one thing is for sure. I will never forget the funny hours I spend. Just test it and give me your opinions.

P.S. Yes it can get hard to make gorky function normally on your devices so get ready for some workerino if u decide to go for it.

There are more forgotten games in this style and I will spend some time trying to remember them. GLHF.

I've put 1,000 plus hours into the long dark, so I obviously like it, but its not really like TWOM. Not sure if you like one you will like the other, but more similarities than differences I suppose, so TLD might be a good one to try.

You're ten months late, I suspect he won't be reading your reply.

Necro alert.

But rather than start a new thread, figured resurrect this one to see if anyone has seen any games appear over the last year that might classify as 'like TWOM' as defined in the original thread.

Previous relies in 2015 seemed to suggest 'a few games that might get close in terms of atmosphere, but not really...'.

Given the success of TWOM, wondered if anyone has seen any more recent games that try to reproduce and/or add to the same style.

I am surprised nobody mentioned Don't Starve. Its a survival based game, though I guess not too similar. Definitely worth a try though.
