I know you said you don't want zombies but this game isn't like normal zombie survival games and the atmosphere and feel is the closest thing I ever played compared to TWOM.
There are 3 different game modes, the first one (they call it easy mode) is an endless mode and you start with 1 survivor (you can recruit more as the game goes).
The second mode (they call it normal mode) you start off with a group of 5 survivors (other than the first mode I don't think you can recruit survivors in the other modes) and got a tip that there's a vehicle somewhere in town that you can patch up (you have to find the parts and the vehicle) and escape the town.
The third mode (they call it hard mode) is almost the same as the previous mode except instead you get a tip that a rescue helicopter is coming to town but you don't know when or where. So you have to find clues hidden around town about the location and time and also find a radio (to contact it I guess?) in a time limit (when the helicopter arrives and if you fail you lose I guess, I never actually played this mode before)
The only similarity is that:
1) You manage a group of survivors in a apocalyptic situation
2) There is resource management as you scavenge (you also have a limited inventory space, although in ZD the limit is based on weight rather than slots and you can increase it if you have a backpack)
Other than that the gameplay is a lot different:
1) Instead of directly controlling the survivors you instead give them orders what to do (cook food, board up etc) and the game calculates it depending on the situation for example you order survivor A & B to go kill zombies around the house, the game then calculates based on their health (whether they're injured or not) and what equipment they have available (if they have a baseball bat or a gun or so on).
2) The entire game is an interface of a diary and a map (so you don't see any action, or zombies for that matter), although I'm fine with this (I thought it was interesting) I know a lot of people that find this a big turn off which is understandable (since all the action is shown in words and some sound and visual effects)
Look up some gameplay of it and decide for yourself whether it's for you (although let me say actually playing it and watching it feels very different).
However, both are Early Access games so keep that in mind. I'm keeping an eye on those two, we'll see where they're going.

I know you said "not sci-fi or zombie apocalypse", but I still think the following survival type of games could be worth a look (they have Demos you can try as well):
Neo Scavenger:

Project Zomboid:

although, even though it breaks most of your criteria, I'd say that if you liked TWOM, you might want to check out Faster Than Light. It's very different than TWOM, but it hits alot of the same 'notes'
in TWOM you're in an uncertain situation, the game is broken up into little segments, your cast of characters changes, you're sometimes presented with decisions along the way, you're constantly scavenging for enough stuff to upgrade your outfit, time is always against you, etc. FTL has all these things, just in very different way. Also I think it's a fantastic game in its own right.

I'll probably look into a few of these, even though as I said in my original post, right now I'm more interested in realistic settings, as I'm really tired of classic post-apocalyptic / sci-fi stuff and zombie apocalypses. I'd stay away from early access games, though.
GORKY 17. http://store.steampowered.com/app/253920/
I can say a lot about gorky but one thing is for sure. I will never forget the funny hours I spend. Just test it and give me your opinions.
P.S. Yes it can get hard to make gorky function normally on your devices so get ready for some workerino if u decide to go for it.
There are more forgotten games in this style and I will spend some time trying to remember them. GLHF.
Indie games are amazing. It's where all great companies start.
I've put 1,000 plus hours into the long dark, so I obviously like it, but its not really like TWOM. Not sure if you like one you will like the other, but more similarities than differences I suppose, so TLD might be a good one to try.
You're ten months late, I suspect he won't be reading your reply.
Necro alert.
But rather than start a new thread, figured resurrect this one to see if anyone has seen any games appear over the last year that might classify as 'like TWOM' as defined in the original thread.
Previous relies in 2015 seemed to suggest 'a few games that might get close in terms of atmosphere, but not really...'.
Given the success of TWOM, wondered if anyone has seen any more recent games that try to reproduce and/or add to the same style.
