To be blunt, if you're dying in raids you're doing something wrong.
Also, a lot of people have problems with the kids staying. Seems to me no matter what you do they run out on you in a day so there's no point in building anything for them or wasting your resources on them.
Hope that helps.
As tritonneptunus said it helps a lot to leave at least 1 weapon at home: a gun, a Knife, or a Hatchet (in order of usefulness).
It also matters which survivor was your Guard (Anton and Cveta are terrible), his/her crises if there was any.
I don't know if raid frequency was changed, but in some Scenarios you just get more. In some of them you get bombarded by them early on.
In Marko-Solo I got raided about 2/3rd of the time before someone joined.
This isn't my first time playing this. I know all about securing the building.
But do please enlighten me on how you can have the whole building boarded up and have the reinforced door in 7 days.
I posted exactly what days I got raided...and it's way too much. That was the point.
Plus it didn't happen in just one game. When starting a new game, the raids still hit just as frequently.
Given how hard it is to find food, it's crushing to keep getting raided. Sure you can fend a few off but eventually some get through. When they do get through they hit your food supply (usually taking 3-4 food each time).
So in both instances, my game was over in 7 or 8 days since all my food was pillaged.
Try to have all holes fixed within the first 3 days (only build one bed and rest someone during the daytime then alternate) then try to have the shop upgraded by the 4th, build the reinforced door by the 5th.
Also, it's not that hard to find food either, and if you trade with the people in the garage and the villa AND with Franko it's even easier. Just invest in making moonshine and instead of healing minor sickness and wounds, let them rest two days.. and then you can sell the bandages and meds to franko or the other people which gets you a LOT of stuff. Also build a few traps so you have a constant supply of food. It's a strategy game for a reason.
I don't know anything about the "solo" but I'm guessing it's the same concept.
The game is not that hard, I think you are over complicating things.
Day 1 - Shovel and Crowbar (upgrade to workshop 2)
Day 1 NIGHT - Prioritize Wood and Components Scavenge.
Day 2 - All holes should be boarded by now.
If you can, get the reinforced door asap and always leave a weapon at the shelter when scavenging.
Get used to it. The fastest I ever got the reinforced door up was day 5.
You have to plan as if you'll be raided every night. The reinforced door is critical during a crime wave. Otherwise, it's not neccesary. You need either:
1 really good guard (just Boris and Roman fit this bill)
2 normal guards
1 normal + 2 bad guards (most women and elderly)
Some characters are better/worse guards than others. The game doesn't provide that information, you have to look it up on the wiki here:
http://this-war-of-mine.wikia.com/wiki/Guard#Guarding
For the most part it makes sense (sorta): women (and the elderly) make for poor guards. Except for Zlata and Arica -- they break that rule, just because.
And everyone needs weapons (shovels/crowbars are fine... there's no defensive bonus for firearms whatsoever -- it's just a binary check: everyone has weapons or not).
If you're doing the solo Marko scenario, then you don't guard at all (Marko cannot successfully guard solo during a crimewave no matter what), you just leave it undefended and lock up all your gear or take it with you.
Use the radio to let you know if a crime wave is coming.
If you do it right, no one ever gets injured using just shovels/crowbars/axes.
Sell firearms and ammo to franko. You don't need them (except for dealing with the snipers quickly) since anyone can stealth kill and anyone can kill anyone with 2 hits with an axe without getting injured if they get the backstab in first (you don't need Arica or Boris/Roman for this to work). Don't bother making moonshine unless you have bruno -- just sell the sugar. Going to the military base is a waste of time if you're there just to sell moonshine.
Once you learn how to play the game, all this becomes too easy.
And I have disabled the raiding as I could not find a way to reduce the ammo usage when guarding other than taking all the ammo with me when scavenging.
I was commenting on if you start with Marko only, just him. When you start with only one or two people, after several days another person comes asking to move in.
