Help me understand how the stealth works in this game
So from my vauge understanding stealth works something like

Walk slow don't sprint to avoid making noise.

Watch for red indecators those are people making noise through walls.

Opening boxes and looting makes a small amount of noise

Avoid guns whenever possible.

close doors behind you because if people see open doors they will freak

The enemy can smell your fear and will follow you dispite not knowing where you are if they find an open door or something that alerts them to your presence

Hiding in shadows does nothing as enemies will still see you and shoot you.

You can stealth kill people with a knife but 9 times out of 10 it will fail or the animation will gitch up and you'll end up just doing a normal attack.

If you can see it you can shoot it even if making that shot invovles percing through a set of stairs or other inviromental blockage.

And just like Dishonored this game has a non-disclosed karma system that silently judges you for everything you do and you won't know about it untill you beat the game and get the worst ending ever because you stabed a few people who were going to ♥♥♥♥ing shoot you if you didn't stop them.

Even after all this and playing the game all the way to day 22 I still feel like I'm missing something. Like I'm not sneaking properly I keep getting detected and searched for dispite closing every single door I open at one point I developed a habit of not fully looting any container because I noticed when a container is empted it changes and I thought that maybe the enemies were spoting the emptied containers.

Am I leaving a trail of muddy boot prints and terrifed piss on every single serface because whenever I sneak the enemy seems to know exactly what direction I went in from a given room even if I didn't sprint I have't been directly spoted yet and have made no noise what so ever.

If you're doing stealth, then yes. Use only when there's only one or two guys left.

If your enemy has seen you and know you're there/has seen you hiding there then yes, hiding in an alcove won't help.

Not all of the characters can sneak kill if sneaking up upon an enemy from behind. Only Roman and Arcia are guaranteed to kill immediately if attacking from behind (Boris too sometimes as I recall), the rest only kill immediately if stealth attacking from an alcove as I recall. Which weapon you use also plays soem role into it - the hatchet does the most damage, but also creates a lot of noise, while the knife doesn't deal as much damage but is quieter.

Yeah, but worry not - it's easy to tell when you're getting a karma hit or not. You only incur a karma hit if you kill non-bandits and non-military - and yes, there are plentythat are not in those categories but will still kill you, but in those cases it's because you're trespassing or stealing their stuff and the like (with some exceptions, such as the bugged civillian woman at the church).

Stealth isn't that tough to pull off and it can be done even if you make mistakes like leaving doors open - though such thigns will often put the people in the area on their guard and the like...

You have a lot of it written down. However, there are a few more things to consider:

* Hiding in alcoves renders you invisible to NPCs. Areas with low lighting don't count; you literally can only hide in alcoves to avoid detection.

* Using a melee attack from an alcove is often guaranteed kill, provided you use a melee weapon (a Hatchet, Shovel, Knife, or Crobwar).

* Using a melee attack from behind deals more damage than on the front, but it isn't always a guaranteed kill.

* Enemies will make noise when they are killed, including instant-kills from alcoves or behind. Arica, however, can kill an enemy silently.

* Most sources of noise reach towards one story above/below. Gunshots are louder.

* You can use noise to your advantage to lure enemies into traps.

* Enemies will notice opened doors. Close every door you pass by unless you wish to use it as bait.

* Looted containers don't raise suspicion.

* You'll be less affected by killings if you spread it across your entire team.
