Can the kids die like other survivors? And if not, is there a mod so that they can?

As far as I know, nope and nope.

It kinda sucks because it feels like there's no real penalty for starving a kid, they'll eventually be taken by the Red Cross anyway. It sort of defeats the point of even keeping them alive, when the adults are actually vulnerable to death. And deaths happen off-screen anyway so I don't think that should be too violent. I appreciate the devs' intention, though.

Actually I think it would be possible but, since they are not supposed to, a lot of things would need to be added. Dunno why you would want that though, the game is depressing enough as it is :-/

B-but immortal children aren't realistic :/ Actually I think I'm at the skill level where no one in my games dies anymore, but I want to see that mod created. I'd definitely use it.

I know it's not "realistic", but at least you keep your sanity. Some stories in the game are already quite disturbing, so imagine reading something like that :

“One night, Kalina died while her brother Grozdan was trying to reach his uncle’s house. He didn’t, and their uncle will never know what happened to them. After the war, Kalina was given a symbolic funeral, but she will never realise her dream of traveling to Africa with her brother”

I can understand the OP's request if his desire is for realism. With all the extreme violence and aggression seen on tv these days, I guess many of us are already desensitized to children dying in a game. So while it may still be disturbing, I don't think anyone will lose their sanity over it.

"Sanity" is a big word, I meant to say "very affecting". Anyway, just did a quick test, and even if they don't leave the shelter, they magically get better the next day, like nothing happened and they were never lethally wounded... So, no dead kids in this game, at least for now.
Children can die in "Sheltered" if you want life or death scenario's across the board type gameplay.

FYI I did two experiments w/ custom scenario to see whether or not it's possible to have a kid die or possibly find out about what is the WORST scenario you can get.
For context, both scenarios I put under 30 days w/ high level of crime and late but moderate severe winter. Also, I use Kalina as the kid in both scenarios.
In addition, lengthy spoiler ahead!

  1. 1st attempt w/ Bruno and Roman + Kalina: so far so good halfway through the scenario. I put Roman to bond with Kalina (for some weird reason he manages to bond with the kid quite quickly although AFAIK degree of sympathy also affects how fast the kid bonds with an adult. *side note: I've tried different scenarios w/ diff adults with varying degrees of sympathy and if you want the kid to bond with you fast I recommend getting AT LEAST the high level of sympathy folks like Katia/Pavle/Marko/Boris*), however Roman died in the military outpost bcs of a glitch that won't make him move for some odd reason. As a result, Kalina got depressed and she's left with Bruno. I don't recall who was the extra person that joined my group during the winter time, but anw I ended up getting Bruno killed which made Kalina broken. Few days later I killed the last adult and the next day I got a note saying Kalina left the shelter.
  2. Marko + Kalina (Arica joined the group in Day 9) : how to [bold] REALLY [/bold] make the worst case scenario in several steps:
    1. Do NOT talk to the kid and get Marko to get out of the shelter often either for scavenging/killing ppl.

    2. kids are prone to getting wounded during raids, they will go from 'sad' to 'depressed' if you get them wounded.

    3. repeat step 1 until you basically get the kid to the severely/lethally wounded level*. This way you'll get the kid to 'broken', afterwards in the next few days it varies.. I had her experience nightmares/wet the bed -> catatonic state -> disturbing role play -> panic attacks.

*if you want to prevent from getting the kid to broken, get an adult to give her bandages + talk to her. AFAIK you'll get a note the next day saying that "*insert adult's name here* used our supplies to help Kalina" (the message pops up if you get an adult not only to talk to a kid & help them if they were severely wounded/ill, but this was observed when I did the scenario w/ Marin, Arica, Katia, Misha).

    4. Last straw was getting her to the 'very hungry' level, and lo and behold....she didn't die HOWEVER she left the shelter w/ Arica and the picture read "Kalina got exhausted. Arica decided to leave the shelter with Kalina to safety". This lead to Marko coming back to the shelter feeling broken and he killed himself the next day :/ Btw the ending credits stated that Arica ran away from the shelter w/ Kalina to a refugee camp but there's no info on whether or not both (or at least one of them) survived after the war.
[/spoiler]So yea, there we go.... I legit had the burning question of whether or not it was possible for kids to die in the game, which pretty much led me into doing these tests.

^You can force them to stay in the shelter by removing the conditions for the ChildHelp/ChildLeft traumas in Emotion config -- Traumas (normally triggered when they reach a critical state: wounded, hungry, etc...). But like I said they magically got better if you did that.

BUT it turns out that you can let children die now, at least indirectly. With the last dlc they added an option called CustomTraumaOnDwellerDeath that, as the name suggests, allows you to trigger any traumas, including suicide, whenever someone die, like say the child guardian.

So yeah, I hope you are happy to know it's possible to do now.. And no I'm not crying :steamsad:

Kids cannot die in this game. When they are terminally sick or lethally wounded, one of the adults will leave the shelter with the kid. And if you have just one adult there - game over.
