The real-world location of "This War of Mine"
So I was bored one night, so I decided to do some research and I discovered the nation that the game, "This War of Mine," takes place in. This country is Denmark, as it is the only country that is mostly english speaking, produces tobacco, has a climate similar to that seen in the game, and is not a third world country. Also, many of the names in the game are popular names in denmark, the nation is predominantly christian (Saint Mary's Church) and football (soccer) is one of the most popular sports in the country.

TLDR; This War of Mine takes place in Denmark

So then what countries do the non-english versions of This War of Mine take place?

This is really neat, good on ya for figuring it out.

We could leave it that they take place still in Denmark, but perhaps it was a military state where everyone was forced to learn X language, and not speak English.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to go with Bosnia-Herzegovina. Denmark has never had a modern day civil war resulting in the siege and destruction of a major city. The main language of the game is simply because that's the major sales demographic. Imperial Tobacco BH is a major European tobacco company based in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina. Most of the character name origins are Russian/Slavic. It also isn't a third world country. The climate is also similar. The religion can be found pretty much anywhere, and where isn't Football a major sport in Europe.

@smatsuro Agreed, all the characters names are of bosnian/serbian origin as you said (Marko, Cveta, Pavle, etc..). Even the devs said it was set in fictive eastern european country I think.

The game was inspired by the poor living conditions and wartime atrocities that Bosnian civilians endured during the 1992–96 Siege of Sarajevo, the longest city siege since World War II.

There you go.

Yeah I was trying to make the opinion, without pointing to the obvious.
There are no names in the game what so ever, that just slightly resembles common danish names. They look slavic to me

....... sorry but no, that doesn't even sound close to Denmark. I live in Sweden and I will even remotly think this will happen in any posibility? You do know that Denmark is part of NATO right? and in NATO an attack on one is an attack on all, this means the US should be in the fight as will most of Europe.

Also no, you are way way wrong even if you think so. The people are not nordic, they are more from Bosnia then Denmark. This game is inspired by the 1992–96 Siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, so you can take that and then try and figure out where this take place. It isn't hard, especially not for Sweds since we have quite a large population that comes from former yugoslavia that fleed the Bosnian genocide when it happened in 1992-1995. You know when you see someone of nordic ancestry and someone from slavic ancestry, its slight but you see the diffrence in ethnicity and all of the characters are not of nordic ancestry.

Fun fact: most settings in the game files are called Kosovo something (e.g Kosovo story events, Kosovo radio channel, etc...). Kosovo is a currently disputed territory south of Serbia, not that far from Sarajevo ;-)
