those books fill up some bits of lore explaining some lore around sector names.
most people don't bother with the books though.
Our Solar System:
- humans from earth discover such a warpgate in our solar system
- warpgate leads to many other warpgates and lots of stars and planets
- earth explores this jump network and builds robots to terraform thousands of planets for human habitation
- robots disappear into the network and do their job
- robots evolve, go rogue and attack humans
- battle for earth, humans getting close to extinction
- small human fleet lures the main terraformer fleet into the earth jumpgate, earth fleet destroys the gate and saves earth
X-Universe:
- small human fleet survivors defeat the robots somehow, but are stranded far from earth and found a new human colony. They call themselves "Argons" (after the admiral Nathan R. Gunne, who won the battle)
- Argons make contact with Borons (pacifist squid aliens), Split (warlike tribal humanoids), Paranid (religious three eyed spider things), and Teladi (mercantile lizards). They all fight various wars but end up in an UN-like "community of planets" or "commonwealth" with a single currency and time system.
Our Solar System:
- Terraformer robots evolve on their own and make it back to our solar system with a portable jumpdrive on a scout ship
- earth humans have become crazy militaristic isolationistic robot-haters, because of nearly being wiped out by their own robot creations.
- earth humans copy the robot jumpdrive and build a prototype jumpship
X-Universe:
- earth jumpship testpilot Kyle William Brennan strands in the X universe by accident and goes on a lot of adventures there (first X novel and game)
- a multitude of books and the second X game tell the story of this test pilot and his offspring.
- commonwealth factions fight various wars with the earth robots (xenon) and a collective of purple triangle ship aliens (Khaak)
- Argons make contact with earth humans again (Argon's heritage from earth has been erased from their official lore) X3 Reunion game takes place
- Earth humans demand that commonwealth stops using any artificial intelligence. X3 Terran Conflict game.
- Commonwealth declines. All factions get stomped by OP militaristic earth humans. X3 Albion Prelude game.
- ancient civilization still exists, shuts down certain jumpgates to isolate all factions and stop them from wiping each other out.
- dark age. the isolated systems have to survive on their own. X-Rebirth game takes place.
- some jumpgates reconnect. X4:Foundations game takes place.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
The Earth jumpgate wasn't discovered, it was made by humans. They built a pair of jumpgates, one of which would be sent to the Centauri system at sublight but it disappeared.
Soon after, the Earth gate "mysteriously" (it was the ancients being curious about humanity) opened a dead network to Humans.
A few years down the line, Earths isolated network is connected to the actual network and our story begins.
As for the gate shutdown, whilst part of it was keeping factions apart - The Terrans were in a bloodrage with the attack on Earth and were going to kill absolutely everyone in the network if the shutdown didn't happen.
