GUI scaling for high dpi screens
👉UPDATE: Paradox patched in a GUI scaling option. It's still a work in progress but most, if not all menus are working fine now. 👈

Thank you Parodox for hearing our prayers!

There is one mod pack that greatly enhances the experience for upscaled UI

Original post:

For everyone who needs to scale their GUI here's a little trick.

1. Goto C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris and open the settings.txt

For Linux users the file is located in
/home/<yourloginname>/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris

2. Now change the line "gui_scale" to anything you want. Got it at 1.500000 right now on a 2560x1440 resolution.

There are some issuses coming with it but it's still playable:

- A lot of graphics on the empire creation screens are not in the correct location (planets for planet preferences, ships for ship type prefefence etc.)

- The context menu shifts to the far right from where you click.

- A small number of tool tips are off screen

I created some mods that will fix the main menu and context menu. They are not nearly perfect but it's at least better playable for now.

You can find them here:

(Removed cause of ingame UI scaling option added by paradox afterwards. If you still want them, just send me a message.)

Figured I would check for a mod or fix before refunding.

Yes it's fixed. Just look for UI scaling in the graphics options

You then just have a UI that is totally blurred like it's often the case in games which are ported from console on my WQHD. Other games are on the point sharp with its textures but this one... I can't play that this way. Bummer. :-/

I play @4k with scaling on 180 and its not blurry at all, check through your settings and try maxing everything out maybe.

I will say that the UI definitely isnt optimal.

Text size is about the only reason I needed to turn it up in this game and maxing it out makes the rest of UI take up too much screen space.

It would be much better if Text size had its own separate UI slider so it could be individually increased.

For anyone having problems with blurry text with UI Scaling, you can enable Image Sharpening in your NVidia Control panel. For me at 1440p with a scaling of 1.2x I use a 0.6 sharpening.
It makes all the difference for us who have poorer eyesight.

My mouse cursor is massive. I have a 43" (resolution 3840x2160 monitor) - and when i start the game it makes my mouse cursor so big it kinda blocks me from reading icon descriptions and such. Was trying to find a config with mouse or video cursor size but havent seen anything.

Kind of a fix:
Well, I put UI scaling to 1.5 which helps with the reading the icon descriptions now. Though the mouse cursor is still too big - anyhow, as info if anyone else has this problem. This at least helps a bit.

When I use the UI scale, the text get a little blurry? is that just my monitor or a common problem?

Unbelievable this isn't fixed yet with 4k displays. The blurry text is painful to look at for more than a few minutes.

I have stopped playing the game because of this:(

what's worse is their launcher is setup with the gui_scale of the game instead of the operating system. Who does that? I mean it is one of the simplest things to do, make a launcher window that scales with the OS, and PDX cannot even do that right?
Woldelele Apr 21, 2021 @ 6:48am
This literally doesn't help at all. It instead blows up the screen, making the text blurry.

How do you turn this stupid crap off? I don't need windows rescaled while I'm playing a fullscreen game.

have the same issue where the left side menu for situation log etc or ship designed the bottom is cut off, i can not save or see what else below it is not showing me in game. It is not mod related, just worked yesterday and went through my new add-ons etc and nothing is causing it, other than the game itself for no reason out of no where.

Thanks a lot for this :)

I have created a guide on how to transfer Windows scaling from Stellaris:

I hope this helps many. :)
