territory claims & peace terms
My Germany wanted to annex the Portugese West Afrika province of Sonyo for the oil resource there. Also the neighboring province of Cuanza , because it has a town / port neighboring Sonyo, and the province Malange , also neighboring Sonyo, for the food .

I made territorial claims on those provinces before declaring war , and only went to war with unaligned Portugal . When I didn't do so , the war was called "unprovoked" and the western allies got really mad and promptly declared war on me.
But maybe that is just a dice roll?

In the first scenario, the British still got a little mad , it said because I was butting into their sphere of influence. I know there is a map for checking spheres of influence, but its utlity is limited because its information box is two-thirds covered up by the menu in the lower left hand corner. Is there some way of minimizing that menu so I can read the map info ?

Anyway, when I finally got Portugal to accept peace ( Portugal would only accept peace when I invaded and occupied Portugal ) I checked off -- or THOUGHT I checked off , 1 - accept German territorial claims, 2 - ( otherwise ) revert to pre-war borders. all else unchecked.

That way, I thought i would get the three provinces I wanted, and all else would revert back to pre-war status qou.
But that's not what happened.
During the war My troops had over run almost all of Portugese East Afrika, and all of Portugese West Afrika.
ALL of it became mine .
The Portugese also handed over Macau, in China, which I never even touched.
I wanted none of this territory ! :(

is there a way to limit peace terms to what I wanted and no more?

I tried to give all this extra territory back, but all I could give back was Malange -- one of the three provinces I originally wanted !
For some reason it had been directly given to Germany. All other territory / provinces had been absorbed by the neighboring German colonies , including , if i remember correctly , Sonyo and Cuanza , the other two I wanted. In any case, Sonyo and Cuanza were not available to give back either , only Malange.

Those results sound odd. You must have a small screen. The UI is optimized to work at 1024 x 800. Anything smaller might have trouble in spots.

Tsingtao would have annexed Macau because it is nationally chinese and lays claim to all of china including Macau. It could be there is an event where if Germany is at war with Portugal your colonies add territorial claims. It might just be easier to occupy the territory you want and push for status quo.

You can transfer the territories from the colonies to Germany from the nationality tab in the government menu and then offer to give the territories back.

There is an event where if Germany goes to war with Portugal, they target and claim Portuguese African regions.

Yes, I figured that out, and that is what I wound up doing.

Interesting. If Germany wants to increase its land holdings , but without going up against one of the big boys , while hopefully avoiding a general war , Portugal is the natural target.

As Portugese West Afrika borders German SouthWest Afrika , I was sorely tempted to annex the whole thing to German SouthWest Afrika to alleviate their cronic food, and thus manpower / money / stability problems.

But, eh, I just wanted the oil resource and a little food. I never meant to gut the Portugese empire. lol.

Prior to WWI, the British & Germans discussed the idea of dividing up the old and weak Portuguese Empire. War halted those plans. Ironically, the Portuguese held on longer than even the British post WWII.
