What triggers Evan writing a successful book?
There is a slightly alternate ending of the game where, while Richter is in Hawaii with his mom in the ending cutscene, their is an interview with Evan Wright on TV about his Miami Murderer's book which is apparently a best seller. I got this, but apparently it doesn't always happen.

I've heard that picking up the cassettes in Richter's room when you visit his mom at the end of Subway triggers it, but I visited Biker at the end of the mission instead and still got that ending. However, I saw someone else who also visited Biker instead and didn't get that ending. What needs to be done that I did accidentally?

You can choose family or the typewriter at the end of Release I think.

I completed the game, but I didn't see choose between family and job.

I mean, it's not going to be shoved in your face, but at the end of that mission, after he goes to the table to read his wife's letter asking him to call her, you could either pick up the phone or go back to your study.

I didn't know that I actually could go back to the phone, so I "chose" the successful book ending. I have to say though that I prefer the one where he's with his family instead when the end lands.

The ending when hes with his family is sad though because one of his kids saw the incoming explosion through a window and pointed to it.

Mm, that kid would've done it even if you didn't see that. I consider it happier since he was actually there with his family when it happened.

I find it really sad though, they're all reunited and happy and then they just get obliterated by the nuke.

I mean, people die. You can't (or don't) cry over every corpse, and they all die regardless of whether he rejoins his family or not, so the way I see it, at least there was a little more pure happiness in the world, in those final moments.

Ok but in the ending where Evan is alone his family could be anywhere, they could have moved far away or be on vacation and narrowly survived, when you see them all together it shows that even his kids died for sure.

Everyone died for sure. America and Russia fired all their nukes at each other. If you didn't know, (during the Cold War) that is enough nukes to destroy the entire planet times 8. Which is undoubtedly what happened.

Wait so the entire earth was destroyed or since all the nukes were in one spot did only america and russia get screwed? Also Canada is in north america so would I be dead if hotline miami was real?

Considering Miami, an insignificant city, and Hawaii were nuked, I'd say the world is pretty boned. That means the U.S. and Russia decided to blow up every population center. If they fired enough nukes, the fallout would just wash across the Earth and kill everyone. And a handful of nukes for every city is definitely enough nukes.

So basically the world would be screwed.

For humans, yes. It wouldn't be sterile, new life would emerge. Heck, you could even make the claim Adventure Time is set years in the aftermath.
