cypher question
So, I'm still very new to the game and I'm confused about cyphers. I know there are artifacts that are usable more than once, but do all artifacts have unlimited usage, or a finite amount?

Also, are there any non-artifact cyphers that have more than one use, or infinite uses? If so how do I tell? Are there any cyphers to be on the look out for? Reason why I ask that last one is that if they are only one time use items, would it not be better to sell them all? Do any of the single use cyphers have permenant effects?

there are bonded artifacts (basically equippables with a positive and negative trait) and cyphers one time use items that vary greatly some are meh, others are really strong. there are some cyphers you can use to gain a permanent buff. i would use cyphers as theyre a core mechanic as well as not really selling that well

There are 5 types of items in the game :

Oddities : most of them are useless and only here to sell, some have fun uses and give xp.
Usable : those are numenera version of potions.
Cyphers : they are limited use unique items, you can only have so much of them and they're made to be used (the game give and sells a lot of them in the course of the game so you don't really have to worry about running out).
Artifact : artifact are equipable items (weapons, ornaments, cloaks etc.) giving more permanent abilities.
Bonded artifacts : these go into the bonded slot, they are powerful artifacts that have a negative counterpart, unless you have the right level in concentration skill.

Alright, does it tell you when the effects are permenant?

Also, what single use cyphers are generally the powerful ones?

Cyphers giving pemanent skills to characters (I think there is only one ingame, it's the +1 concentration cypher) state it in the description "gives permanently +1 training level in X skill". All other cyphers give 1 use, X uses or work for a crisis or a turn or X turn or until next sleep.
Either way; the cypher's tooltip (not the full description, just the tooltip you get by mousing over it) will state quite clearly when it's a permanent boost.

There's another you can get from the rockslide behind the Genocide in Circus Minor - I think you have to fail at Smashing the rocks and you get a cypher that gives a permanent +1 to Quick Fingers (it's an artificial finger, like it looks like a real severed finger until you look at the 'wound' and see a bunch of wires and such - you get the bonus by eating it).

Well it was either the rocks or the caniser, I can't remember now.

I failed the canister when save scumming after an accidental death I did NOT want, so I just ran around doing random ♥♥♥♥ to see what would happen. Canister is only less money than if you had succeeded.

Don't rush through the game but take the time to experience how it all works.. Build your characters carefully without expecting to be godlike or achieving everything without getting any resistance.. Take your time and try your best, that's the way you should do it.
