It's P2P, that's why it's actually dangerous to play with randoms. Rockstar pretends nothing is wrong, and the shills keep defending them and making excuses.
As for comparing GTAV to GTA San Andreas, that's kind of tough, or certainly the map is far smaller in GTAV, but then you can also tell they put a lot more care into the design and placement of things, whereas areas of old school San Andreas could feel rather spartan. However, at least in the vicinity of Los Santos you might feel somewhat at home quickly since that same part of the state was featured in San Andreas; significantly redesigned but sporting the same major landmarks.
There is no "hassle" and it's not your server, it's all automated.
Wait what? Now I'm a little confused. So multiplayer is not like Ark or Valheim or Minecraft style.. Hmm, I guess I'll dig deeper.
However... you can find your way around this if you're a bit handy with Windows. It's not hard to set up a firewall and block other players for example. Or you can opt to use private lobbies and only invite your friends.
IMO the multiplayer experience can definitely be tons of fun, as long as you're careful who you're playing with.
Can't comment, but when compared to GTA4 multiplayer you'll notice that things have been heavily enhanced. In the older games multiplayer was mostly a shoot 'm up and free for all, in GTAO otoh you can actually take on dozens of activities together (or against each other) which can be fun enough.
I've been playing ever since it got out on PS3, later on hopped onto Steam and now I'm again around the 1500hour mark. There's plenty to do and enjoy here, but of course it depends on you if you're going to like it.
Most missions in this game aren't running too deeply. It's usually "go there, kill baddies, optionally pick up item and return home". RInse & repeat.
Of course there's tons more to do. Races, death matches, survivals, etc, etc.
No, you're not logging into a server. It's a peer to peer network, in which up to 30 users in a session can send data directly to your game and you send data directly to theirs, with no game server in the middle. That's why it's so insecure and easy to implement cheats, because their fake game data is treated just as valid as your legit data without an official server to act as judge.
That said, unauthorized multiplayer servers do exist using a modded version of the game. They exist in a grey area in which Rockstar officially prohibits doing this, but won't take legal action against the servers so long as they follow certain rules. The quality of that experience depends entirely on the server Admin though. It's wild west out there.
