What's the deal with the military base blowing up aircraft instantly?

I'll be flying along with my helicopter and i just instantly blow up. This is stupid and should be fixed no matter the explanation, but is there a way to stop this? I can't do anything in the military base without getting killed instantly. And when I turned on invincibility I got bored realizing that there is a whole lot of nothing to explore and interact with. Also, it seems to be impossible to dodge the missiles (the ones that do seem to give a half second notice before they hit you as opposed to instantly blowing up my vehicle).

The missiles appear to come out of thin air as they hit me whether I'm on the ground or in the air, and I've tried everything to dodge them, so I'm assuming this is some game mechanism to just not let the player take aircraft? what's the deal?

I see the game says I'm 60% of the way through, even though i got to the end credits.

Trevor's mom is in his trailer now giving me a mission, but I'm not sure how much of the game is left based off of this and how much of that remaining 40% is side missions. Anyways, is there something later that gives information about the military base? because right now it's just a big f u to the player.

I hate to say this, but san andreas seems like the better game when it comes to interactivity, discovery, game play, extras, engagement, etc... the story and characters are excellent, although franklin's character seems tacked on, he should have been replaced with brad or something and just skip the whole brad is dead thing. anyways, sa appears to have done these things better. am i missing something?

You don't blow up instantly. First you hear a lock being put on you which gives you a fair warning to start dodging, something you confirmed yourself. Not to mention the 4 star wanted rating.

Alas, you don't even own the game on Steam so... this is all I'm willing to share ;)

It’s either AA missiles which you hear the lock on or the tanks. It’s a military base, what do you expect? There’s a mini gun in the air traffic control tower but good luck getting it and getting out alive. The best bet is the jet inside the open hangar as there are no guards inside there except those that follow you. Easiest one to get. All the others are too open or have guards by them. In online you can buy a hanger there and it isn’t an issue anymore, but no such luck in solo. Really a shame they didn’t add the online stuff to story.

is this supposed to be "reeeeeee he pirated it!??!?!" because i own it on the epic store. who even cares? it's adding content to this forum which is valuable to players.

no i don't hear the lock on noise. it's as i say where i just blow up. and this even happens with 0 stars... do you really think someone would mistake all these things, then you circle back around and "dunk on them"? that's how you know what you're thinking is incorrect.

Fly low. If you are too high, their air defences annihilate you. If you are on the ground then probably you get blown up by a tank.

ok wait. so there's just no feasible way to use these vehicles? there's no disguise to steal and go in as a spy or something? I'm pretty sure this base was used to get that military helicopter for that one mission, but how did i not get shot down then?

If this is all true, then I have to say, San Andreas is the best GTA game to date. Can you even play pool in this game? I guess I get why you can't work out, but maybe you should be able to work out. There's no combat training. No vigilante missions (i guess they kind of broke them up in random events around town, but BLAH!). I wasted 3 hours trying to figure out that military base thing and got ZERO information out of it, and if it's what you say, then it was REALLY a waste of time.

what gives? why would they downgrade this game? I haven't played gta 4 yet

well that's what I'm saying. I tried staying on the ground until i reached the outer edge of the base, but i didn't even get half way there until i got hit with a missile. which is what was leading me to believe the missile was appearing out of thin air to kill the player since AA guns are usually facing the sky, and I never saw any of the soldiers carrying homing launchers.

Don't steal nor cause trouble (even getting closer) inside Zancudo Military Airport (by exception during certain freeroam mission, Contract Mission, and heist preps / finales where the nonsense will not happen) because they'll prevent players from stealing it (see video links below).

The ONLY safest way to steal it is by owning a Hangar inside the Military Airport (GTA Online) only where stealing the plane will only give you 2 stars wanted as long as you don't fire them back.

People managed to steall the lazer long before hangar dlc, not everyone is born as topgun and deserves one

There was a trick in the past, where you had to watch backwards while evading and zancudo wouldn't use its antiair, don't know if it was patched but who cares simply have your hangar at zancudo and you have no trouble to get one
and for sp use menyoo when you suck at stealing stuff...

True that, those were fun days on PS3, you could always find a bunch of people around Zancudo who were trying to get in.

The easiest entry was to use the highway; at the north side. If you drive full throttle up to the base then you can leave the highway to the right, drive up the hill and you'll be launched over the fence.

Then you need to quickly drive over to a lazer, park the car, get in, take off and then evade the anti-air defenses. It's best not to do this at night because then you'll have bigger chances of rhino tanks spawning in and your car is no match for those.

Of course these days you could simply use the scramjet, vigilante or maybe the toreador and fight back ;)

It works a bit differently in missions. Some missions where you can go wherever without failing (such as the hunting mission with Trevor) you can explore the base without wanted stars, take a jet etc. but outside of missions it’s instant 4 stars with tanks, AA missiles, and guards with ARs galore. Honestly there’s not much reason to go there outside of the minigun or stealing a jet/tank for some havoc. It can be done but it’s a real chore. Not really worth it IMO.

so i'm not crazy about blowing up instantly? because 3 or 4 times i've been cruising my helicopter past the base, didn't hear or see a missile launch, nor did i have a wanted level, and i just blew up.
