Generally speaking you're better of starting the game in story mode, and from there hop into online (if that's what you were going for). It'll reduce the loading times.

By 20 minutes in the loading screen, Venti, do you mean that screen with whirling clouds? Yes, that's the screen you get when it's trying to find a lobby for you, and sometimes that does hang forever. When that happens you need to go into the windows resource monitor (I always keep that open when I play GTAO) and suspend the grand theft auto process for ten seconds. Then release it. Don't suspend it longer, but shorter than that usually has no effect. Once you do this it will give up trying to find a lobby for you and will put you into your own lobby.

Regardless of which screen it is, if you suspect it's hanging forever, do the above process to free it.

Make sure during the loading, you don't switch to other tasks, or activate social club (pressing home), or activate steam-overlay (pressing shift+tab). Doing so can make it load forever. It's an issue with GTA online that's been around since the game was released.

20 minutes is way too long. It should take about 5 minutes or less. If you experience long loading times again try the solo lobby trick to force it to connect to a new lobby.
I suspect the problem has more do with other people's connections and mods that other players have loaded.
